Not sure you could do better in Monterey. Stayed 3 nights. From the front desk to the valet parking to the restaurant to the servers at our private dinner everyone was helpful, friendly and made us feel welcome. Had great room over looking bay (think 1125?). Hotel provided binoculars in the room which is a nice touch and handy for watching all the marine life and boaters on the bay. Every time we got our car we were asked if we needed directions. Hotel is right on Cannery Row and a very short walk to the Aquarium. Had dinner at Schooners 1 night and it was excellent. Had 1 catered dinner for the group we were with. Food, service high quality Room was very comfortable. Had great night sleep. Would certainly go back ,

For high end hotels like the Monterey Plaza, the differentiation is in how the little things take care of themselves. As an example, we get into our car and Dmitri the valet says, "do you know where you are going?" and we say, "kinda". He responds by going inside, printing us out a map, and giving us restaurant recommendations in that area. Or we can thank Mehta for handling our room upgrade after the first night, seamlessly handling our bag transfer so we arrived back, had new room keys and everything was all set for our new Bay view room. So yes, they absolutely did deliver. Was it the most beautiful hotel I've ever seen? well... no. I think if I went back to the area I'd rather stay in Carmel, just thought Monterey was a bit too touristy. But it was absolutely lovely and if Monterey was your destination, you are well served at the Plaza.

Luxury hotels are luxury hotels as you know, and depending on what your expectations or experiences are the best currency in this arena is always courtesy, attention to detail, and going out of the way to make a great experience truly excellent.

We're regular Monterey visitors, but rarely stay. In this case, my wife and I were celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary and I wanted to recreate as best I could, our honeymoon experience in Positano where our hotel room just about hung over the Mediterranean. The Plaza has such rooms if you book on the Ocean View side. I think they upgraded us from a "partial" to "full" ocean view but the desk never mentioned it. [Pro tip: We booked the room on Expedia, but I called a few days in advance to confirm. It's worth doing so for special occasions as expedia does not convey details such as this being an anniversary, and that we had also booked reservations at the spa and restaurant. That may have led to our upgrade.]

Our room was perfect, hanging right over the water - just as it did in Positano. On the SE end of the property, this is right next to a small beach entry that kayakers and divers use (just down from breakwater, if you dive) which means that the water there is of course fairly calm but you fall asleep and awake to the sound of gentle waves. There was a small gift and welcome/congratulations note from the manager - John - inviting us with a discount to the restaurant or spa, which we had already booked. Again, another reason to call ahead and confirm the occasion.

The Plaza is spread over at least 3 buildings of rooms around the end of Cannery Row, with two abutting the Bay. In between, there is a beautiful (public) plaza that you see in all the pictures. This is a popular place for weddings, which they typically do in the lower plaza, closer to the water, which is not accessed by the public but can be seen from above. There is also a fair amount of meeting space at the lower level so expect that things could be busy/noisy down there on occasion. The noise does not drift at all to the upper levels. Schooners, the restaurant is also at the lower level and we had a wonderful late dinner with a table just above the water. Looking across the bay at night, reminded us of a dinner we had in Ischia watching fireworks across the water in Procida... The food/wine/service was impeccable, and we really enjoyed their "Farm to Table" 4 course meal/wine pairing.

The rooftop Vista Blue spa is wonderful. Top notch massage service, and the exercise room & hot tubs overlook the plaza and water. My only (minor) complaint? As the spa is open until 9, we were hoping to catch the sunset from the roof but unfortunately, the westward view is unavailable by the building configuration.

The Plaza is at one end of Cannery row (the quiet end) and it is a leisurely walk all the way down to the aquarium by sidewalk or the bike trail. Fisherman's wharf is also close enough to walk in the other direction along the water. Reception was great, valet parking was great - they sent us off with some cold water, and the bell service was prompt and courteous. It seemed there were more than enough staff on hand.

Our stay at the Plaza was spectacular - definitely our first choice for a special getaway in Monterey. We'd bring the kids (it's family friendly), but then they'd wonder what the big deal is about Italy and demand that we take them there too...

Room Tip: Ocean view is a premium, but totally worth it. If you use a booking service, definitely call the hotel directly a few days in advance to confirm and, if you ask politely, I'm sure they'll try to put you in the best room possible available to you.

Our family loved being able to walk to Cannery Row, the aquarium and restaurants. The hotel is beautiful we enjoyed sitting in the couches by the fire pit. The coffee shop was good. The spa was
great, I had a massage with Peter it was very good. The views from the hot tubs on the roof were amazing! Nice trail for running and biking close by.

We stayed at Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa for 2 nights as part of a Vegas/ PCH road trip and were highly impressed. It's in our top 3 of the 10 hotels we stayed at.
Upon our early arrival, the very efficient and friendly receptionist offered us an upgrade from an ocean view room to one with a balcony, which we took. Our room wasn't ready, so we went to their restaurant, Schooners, for lunch. The food was fantastic - delicious and good value.
When we got to our room, the upgrade was well worth pating for. The room was large, very well and luxuriously appointed and the view was simply stunning - and the highlight was being able to step onto our balcony and enjoy it. The hotel supply binoculars to view the sea otters and sealions, which happily play in the waters below.
The bed was one of the most comfortable we stayed in, the bathroom was a good size, and there was a little dressing area next to it which I particularly liked.
Monterey Plaza is within walking distance of most amenities including the wharf - this is a beautiful walk on a sunny day, where you can watch as the sealions relax in the sun. The hotel is situated on Cannery Row, which has been maintained and has an old world chic about it.
The beach next to the hotel is small but very quiet. Perfect to while away an hour in the sun.
The hotel staff are exceptional - we booked a whale watching trip from the wharf and were informed to be there at 8am. The hotel concierge informed us that they start taking guests into town (in the hotel's private car) at 8am, but we arrived about 10mins early and the Concierge was happy to drive us to the wharf. The restaurant and bar staff at Schooners were also fantastic - friendly and helpful.
There's a great little coffee shop situated within the hotel on the verandah, which opens at 6 - this is the perfect time to grab your morning paper and get the best seat overlooking the ocean.
In all, the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa is a truly luxurious establishment, with a service to match.
