“Large but stinky room.”
Reviewed 20 August 2012

Nice hotel staff upon arrival. Due to the car we were driving, we were unable to park in the underground garage and they suggested a parking space right behind the hotel lobby. There is a $13 nightly parking fee.
Our room was on the 2nd floor and the hotel hallways are well secured, needing a room "key" to enter each section.
Our room was large, but smelled terrible! We opened doors to air it out, while the housekeeping mgr sprayed the furniture with lemon Pledge to try to help. She said it was from the disinfectant they spray the carpet with. Actually it smelled like the vacumm bag and filter needed changing. The closet smelled the worst and we didn't hang any clothes in there because of that.
They brought us a tray with a small bottle of nice wine, a small box of chocolates, and some Perrier water. I think it was a peace offering.
We booked this room last minute (through an agent: Resort2me) during the busiest weekend of the year and I am embarrased to admit we paid $$$$ (read: Way Too Much!) for the room.
The breakfast was adequate. They had hard boiled eggs and sausage for those of us watching our carb intake. Lots of bagel, toast, and muffin choices for everyone else, but the pre-made omelets didn't look edible.
The bed was less than comfortable and although they had many pillows to choose from, there wasn't an extra blanket provided, which we could have used.
The neighborhood is shabby but convenient for walking to attractions and restaurants. The Sardine Factory is only 2 blocks away.
Note: This is not a B&B in a Victorian Inn...only the Lobby and Dining Area are in the old house. The rooms are in a relatively modern hotel/motel type building.

To begin, I want to thank this reviewer for taking the time to share their feedback regarding their recent stay. I consider such feedback to be extremely valuable, as it provides our best possible opportunity to make improvements. I also want to thank this reviewer for their high ranking of our service staff; we recognized that it is the hard work of our staff that helps to set our hotel apart, and I am happy to know that they were able to make a positive impression.

That being said, I want to apologize that this guest felt their stay did not live up to their expectations. Our hotel is just two blocks up from Cannery Row, and as such is in an area that is a mix of local businesses, private homes, and a few neighboring hotels. The two blocks from Cannery Row is generally considered a nice buffer from the bustle and activity of such a busy tourist destination, but we all deeply regret that this guest felt it was instead a detriment to their stay.
With regard to the smell in this guest’s room, I want to apologize again; our housekeeping supervisor is investigating this further, and steps will be taken to make sure something like this is not overlooked in the future. We want our guests to feel entirely comfortable in their rooms, and we will work to correct anything that may detract from that comfort.

Should any guest wish to speak with our managers directly regarding a question or concern, please do not hesitate to give us a call. We consider comments from all of our guests – both current and future – to be extremely valuable, and we welcome all feedback.

Thank you,
the General Manager

We had a suite and it was ample in size for four adults. We were in the area for a wedding and it worked out great. The service was excellent. The front desk people were always nice and accommodating. I appreciated that. The room was nice (loved the big shower) and the location to what we were there for was great. The parking was easy to get in and out of.
I would stay here again.

Easy walk to the aquarium and cannery row, nice room with fireplace. Staff very helpful and were able to leave the car in their parking garage after checkout, saving trying to find a place to park down by the water. Free breakfast which was good and price very reasonable. I am sold on Best Western Plus hotels after this trip and will look for them again.

If you stay at the Victorian Inn in Monterey, you will be close (walking distance) to the Cannery Row attractions including the Aquarium. The room rate, relatively speaking, is going to be less expensive than the fancier hotels. And, the staff will go out of their way to make sure your stay is as pleasant as possible. The rooms are a little dated but they have all the basic ammenities that you need and are well kept.

The wine and cheese hour and free breakfast are a bonus but it is unrealistic based on the room rate to expect them to serve high quality wine or a lavish breakfast spread. Monterey has excellent wineries in the area so a good suggestion would be to bring your own bottle(s) back to the hotel and use the wine and cheese hour to gather up some cheese, crackers, and fruit for you to enjoy with your wine of choice. Same is true for the breakfast...it is VERY convenient to have some breads, fruit, and other continental-style choices available right there in the hotel which can tide you over until you can have a more extensive breakfast/brunch at the many good restaurant choices in the area.

Room Tip: The third floor rooms have vaulted ceilings which make the rooms feel much larger. You also avoid t...

We had a king room on the 2nd floor with a balcony. The high vaulted ceilings were exquisite, as was the fireplace. It was August, and we were thinking, ” what will need a fireplace for in August!” Turns out if got pretty chilly and moist that evening, so it was great fun having the fireplace.
I didn't like however that it cost $300 for one night.

Well, we did book the family suite. Knowing that we would get a sofa sleeper, assuming you could sleep on it... You can't!! It's too old, you can feel all the springs, the mattress is too thin. And of course we complained. Yeah well, nothing to do about that sofa sleeper. We got two twin rollaway beds to sleep in, slightly better but still not for sleeping well. We are not big people so I don't know how anyone larger can sleep in these! We would have gone across the street to the Holiday inn express (always good beds) but it was full.
And the pictures on the internet; only the lobby is an old Victorian Inn, the rest is an average hotel. It didn't bother us that much if we wouldn't have been cranky from not sleeping...
We didn't have to pay for parking ( $13,- per night) but that doesn't really compensate for not sleeping...
The double beds for the children were ok, although they are very small double beds... Yes and I know the manager will say it's only 6 inches from a queen, but they stay small.

Breakfast is nothing special, it's there. It says fresh orange juice, but it's from a carton.

So we won't be staying here again. Maybe the manager will write a reply about how good it is that we took the time to write this review but I suggest he/she spends the time to adjust the sofa sleepers!! Maybe try them yourself to know what I'm talking about.

Room Tip: No family suite!

I want to encourage anyone that wishes to speak with a manager about a question or concern to please reach out to us; our managers are reachable by both email and phone, and we would much prefer to speak with a guest directly than have them feel their concerns have been disregarded.
I also want to assure this reviewer, and everyone reading, that we are genuinely grateful for their time and effort in giving their feedback. Not everyone has the time to speak with the hotel directly, so when travelers share their comments on forums like TripAdvisor, the thanks that we give are entirely sincere.

Additionally, please know that this reviewer’s comments regarding the sofa sleeper have been taken to heart, and we are looking into ways to either improve or replace the sleeping surface. Though we have not received other comments regarding the bed, it is our policy to thoroughly inspect any item that a guest brings to our attention.

Should any guest – be they present or future – like to speak with a manager about a question or concern, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.

Thank you,
the General Manager

The Victorian Inn is located in an area where you can walk to most of the attractions in Monterey. The rooms are cozy and clean. The breakfast is decent and the hotel offers a very nice wine and cheese display in the afternoon. The hotel staff were friendly and professional.
