It was our last romantic getaway before our baby comes. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the hotel is walking distance to all of the Monterey attractions, and our room was very comfortable & clean! Definately worth our money.

My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights. Everyone at the front desk was very sweet and helpful, with the exception maybe of a 'trainee' who didn't know Monterey and Carmel very well and who gave us wrong directions one day. No big deal...we had maps! The L'Occitane products are nice, the fireplace in the King-bed suite was much appreciated on the grey day we arrived, and it's a good location. The price was high for a few of the days but that was due to the classic car show that drew thousands of well-heeled ferrari-driving types to the area. A few points that would make the hotel better: the restaurant is not very good. The dinner menu is tapas, which is annoying, and the breakfast menu deceptively only lists the $12 buffet, and makes no mention of the fact that you can have everything ala cart. As I'm never interested in breakfast buffets, my husband and I ate breakfast out every day until we asked if we could just have some oatmeal without paying $12 and they said 'sure'! The pool would benefit from a jacuzzi, and I think the carpets need a clean. Very good showers, nice deep bathtub...pillows weren't too comfortable but that's a matter of opinion.

We looked forward to this hotel that is a part of the "prestigious" Larkspur Collection of lodgings, but were dismayed by the badly soiled carpet that was generally dirty with multiple deep stains, a light dirt scum on the night stand, tables and bathroom counter and commode. There were streaks of something all down the wall beside the commode and the bathroom floor was soiled. We got out our disinfectant spray and wipes, but after collecting too much dirt, we were so grossed out that we contacted management and secured a refund. We joined a conversation in the parking lot with guests from two other rooms who had the same complaints of soiled carpet and poor cleaning in their rooms. We decided to play it safe and booked a room at the less acclaimed Courtyard by Marriott at Salinas where we are paying less money and enjoying a much cleaner and more comfortable accommodation. The staff was gracious and polite.

I have stayed at Casa Munras six or eight times over the last 10-15 years. I have always enjoyed my stay here. Here are several reasons I regularly choose it as my place to stay in Monterey. Some of these may also be important to you, positive or negative.

1. The hotel layout: This is a motel-type place with parking in front of your room. Most buildings are two stories. Most rooms face the interior garden-parking-pool area. Nice landscaping, lotsa flowering vines. Benches, tables, chairs in several places on the second floor landings.

2. The pool: I like nice swimming pools and this is one. Good-size, heated pool in a pleasant area in center of grounds. Nice place to hang out. Not uncommonly, a number of European travelers around the poolside.

3. The restaurant: Reasonably good breakfast. More that just the cold cereal, yogurt, muffin type. Evening tapas restaurant and bar recently opened. I have not tried the tapas due to eating at many of the fine restaurants in Monterey but they looked and sounded good. Next trip. Outside, pleasant sitting area at restaurant with fire pit.

4. Location: About a 20-minute stroll down to Fisherman's Wharf. Even though Casa Munras is a few blocks outside the downtown area, the stroll is mostly along a pleasant, commercial, downtown-shopping street. Clothing stores, pubs, restaurants, coffee houses, drug stores, movie houses, curio shops, antique dealers, historic buildings, etc. You get the picture. The first few blocks, before you get into downtown, have a Trader Joe's Market (one of my favorites) and a few (non-fast food) sandwich and burger shops with a Peets coffee house next to them.

5. The WAVE bus: Two blocks from Casa Munras toward downtown is the Monterey Transit Plaza. Here is one of the stops for the (Summer only) WAVE bus. This is a free bus that will take you to the Wharf, Cannery Row, The Monterey Bay Aquarium and generally through the tourist area of town. Get on and off all day. Casa Munras has free parking and it has not been uncommon for me to leave my car here and walk or take the WAVE bus wherever I wanted to go in Monterey.

6. The farmer's market street fair: Every Tuesday afternoon, the downtown stroll to the wharf is occupied by a farmer's market. The street is closed to traffic and for three blocks there are produce vendors, food stands and what I call "trinket and craft dealers". Many of the small, ethnic restaurants on the street set up stands with their delicacies. One side street is dedicated to breads and pastries. Always enjoyable.

7. The management: A good group of people who go out of their way to make things right. Enough said.

My one con: There is no hot tub. When I have asked why, the management has told me that a permit is needed due to Monterey’s general shortage of water. Their permit is used by the spa located on site. About the spa, I can tell you nothing. I have never used it.

Smaller room than I expected, but could live with it. The rug was very dirty and nobody should have been let this room until the carpet was cleaned. Kids with cola or something, nothing too gross. But it looked awful.

Front desk, business center and lounge were above par. Pool was nice and value for small room of $114 per nite is not too bad. I don't think I would go back and would spend abit more money for a little bigger room. I mean it was a small drive up motel type room

Yes, the outside is lovely and the location is good. But the rooms are small, not really clean, bathrooms need work (and better cleaning). Windows are old and don't work well at all.
Not value for the money.

While this property isn't beachfront and takes some plannning to get to the attractions in monterey, the hopitality was outstanding. It's centrally located in Downtown Monterey with a free shuttle to all things worth seeing. The lobby is always stocked with fresh fruit and baked cookies in the afternoon. You can borrow a wide list of DVD's. The pool is heated :). Best of all was the service. They were informative and genuinely wanted to help make our stay the best.
