We just had pub snacks. But the menu had some real variety and the choices - risotto and meatballs were two choices - were really quite good. I would definitely recommend stopping in for a nice rose and a few good pub eats.

We recently (May 24) had our wedding rehearsal dinner at Jack’s in the Portola Hotel and were really pleased with the outcome. First, we were looking for a venue that could accommodate a group of about 35 people and possibly 40. Most of the guests were staying at the Portola and so we wanted a venue close by. After working with other local restaurants, Jack’s was definitely the winner.

Christian, the coordinator, was great to work with. Initially, she presented several menu options at a few price points as well as the whole menu to get an idea of what was possible. Of the choices, we had to accommodate vegetarians and those who keep kosherish (no pork, no shellfish, no mixing of milk and meat on the dish). We also wanted to make sure the food didn’t duplicate our wedding menu. We came up with a great solution at the right price point. In addition, Jack’s was a great venue able to accommodate everyone in an intimate setting—given the size and noise level of our group—Jack’s provided the feeling of being in a luxurious, private locale. With a full bar, people could order whatever drinks they wanted.

The menu we settled on was tea-smoked salmon with greens on crustini and fried risotto fritters with a marinara sauce, served family style. Both hors d’ouvres were a huge hit. One person said they could make a whole meal out of the fritters. Seriously, good starters!
We also got mixed greens salads with candied nuts and gorgonzola—also perfect. We wanted our out-of-town guests to enjoy some of the local harvest and the salad really showcased what is grown fresh right here. The dressing was light and complementary to the nuts and creamy, rich cheese. The portion was ample.

The entrees were either a vegetarian ravioli in a garlic cream sauce or a lemon rosemary chicken. I opted for the rosemary chicken—roasted perfectly with a luxurious flavoring over horseradish potatoes and steamed vegetables. Juicy chicken juices atop the pillowy potatoes with a punch were exactly what we were after for a rehearsal dinner. My fiancée (now wife) got the ravioli and really enjoyed them. She said that the cream sauce was light and didn’t overpower the flavor of the ravioli. In my taster bite of her plate, I agreed and wished I could get a 50/50 plate with both entrees.

The service was also impeccable. With had a curious infant with us, so there was bit of juggling around the baby and everyone wanting to hold her. Mac and Hailey introduced themselves as head servers and were awesomely attentive and accommodating to some of the more difficult guests. My 89-year-old grandma chose to ask for piece of everything “just to taste.” Another of the elderly vegetarians claimed he didn’t like something in the ravioli and was trying to find something else without listening to the smart recommendations of the server (The server recommended the vegetarian risotto—instead, he just wanted the mashed potatoes and steamed veggies from the other dish—his loss!). They also were attentive when one of our late comers arrived and quickly produced a meal for him—much appreciated.
As dinner winded down, people moved around to schmoozed. The servers continued on their tasks—clearing and later bringing dessert—making sure everyone was covered. The dessert was a strawberry sorbet with fresh strawberry coulis and fruit. Normally, after such a big meal, dessert would be hard to push—but, OMG. The sorbet was excellent! I’d had their sorbet before—but this one really showcased the strawberries’ freshness and sweetness—leaving us all with smiles.

My now wife and I were thrilled with Jacks. The atmosphere, the food, the service—all were really great. The support staff in the dining room and Jacks Lounge were great (we asked their names--Tuyet, Miguel, Omar, Shane, Tyler and Jonathan).

Our guests felt they had come to an occasion and the festivity carried over to the wedding the next day .

Great Veggie sandwich, fast service, excellent wine selection, nice ambiance, best of all it was in the hotel, after a 6 hour drive and hungry, no need to leave the hotel. Perfect!

We're locals and Jack's is THE place for breakfast buffet on Sunday...Paris bakery almond croissants, made-to-order omelets, mimosas with cranberry juice, French toast with fresh fruit, lox and capers. Parking is not an issue b/c there is validated parking in the Chase garage! Ask for Frieda, she is the best!

The only meal we had while staying at the Portola was the buffet and it had a great selection of food. The staff that waited on us at the table for kitchen orders was very friendly. We ordered both pancakes and French Toast from the kitchen and they were both and hot and tasty. We really liked the omelet station and lots of fruits on the buffet. Would recommend the breakfast buffet.
