This place is and old Kentucky Fried Chicken fast food joint and is not much to look at. As you walk up to the door, a couple things will catch your eye. First is the surfer stickers stuck all over the windows. Second is the ordering line, as this is a very popular place. The line moves quickly and as you make it inside, the old KFC bench type seating makes you wonder what you got yourself into. Then you look at the clientele...there are folks from all walks of life in this place, all eating food off styrofoam plates with plastic forks. There are rich and poor, surfers, fisherman, and a lot of Latinos as this place is a favorite with them.
Reading the menu gives an outstanding selection. Everything from tacos to to tostados, and all types of meat selections. My favorite is the Asada Burrito Coronado, which is grilled steak in a wet burrito with guacomole and sour cream on top and chips stuck in around the burrito. Their hot salsa is to die for and there is some special flavor that I can find nowhere else that comes through when you pour that salsa over the burrito and take a bite. Add a cold Corona with a lime and I'm in heaven.
I have to laugh when I see folks comparing this place to Taco Temple. It's like comparing apples to oranges. Taco Temple is great in it's own right, but they use real plates and silverware and have waiters. The food is also more California fusion. If you want authentic Mexican food in a funky, family-run setting, then Taco de Mexico is for you.
