“Not For Me!!!”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

Went for a romantic B&B experience...not what we bargained for. The woman who showed us around was warm and friendly but upon entering the room, we were disappointed. We stayed in the Boat House in the most expensive room they had (almost $300 with tax) upstairs with the sailing theme. Views were great but the room was very small. Credit to the photographer they used, because the brochure shows the room we stayed in and with the special lens they used to photograph it, it looks HUGE. The room had a distinct smell, had to open all windows right away to air it out. It seems to be from the 1980's and never updated. The bedding seems old and a bit tired, the sails tacked to the ceiling are stained and permanently block the entertainment area from the bed (including the fireplace). The home made furnishings seem like they are "do it your self" weekend types of projects that don't quite measure up to the price of the room. We had a "home made" king bed made from sail masts, part of a boat and what seemed to be a home made frame. The bed creaked, popped and groaned LOUDLY with the slightest movement and we literally could not sleep. The bed is built so high that it is hard to get in and out of, even for my 6'2" husband. There are little sets of stairs to get in and out of, but look out if it is dark in there and you are trying to get down from the bed on those little stairs! Also, no shower, just a bath tub out in the room, so no privacy for getting cleaned up; just sort of out there on display whether you want to be or not. Also the window coverings are heavy home made canvas sections and hang up on hooks; so to see the view you have lift up the whole thing above your head and drop into a "trough" on the floor. Reverse that process to hang back up. After laying awake on the noisy bed until 2am, we desperately needed sleep and decided to leave; we were told NOT to call the front desk after 9pm unless it was an emergency so we tried to leave the keys in the main lobby in the basket marked "check out keys", upon leaving the keys in the basket, we could not lock the door when exiting (which we were told never to leave unlocked!) and had to call the manager. We were not asked if there was a problem (at 3am at that point) just told curtly to just leave the key in the room. So we did.

The couple informed us that they would be leaving bright and early to go on to their next destination. Guests are informed upon arrival that when checking out they can leave their keys in the room or in the lobby, whichever is most convenient. Therefore, I was surprised when I was awoken at 3am to this couple telling me that they were checking out. I try my best, but sometimes my voice on the phone doesn't always sound cheerful that early in the day. I'm sure that's the reason for the critical critique.

The room is a popular room with a king size bed, two chairs overlooking the water to watch all of the wonderful wildlife, a desk, an armoire with cozy robes, a fireplace, and an oversized soaking tub big enough for two people to enjoy. It is a sizable room favored by many couples. The bed is made from a 505 racing sailboat and the canopy and curtains are made from the boat's original sails. Travel writers from best-selling magazines have described it as original, unique, and fun. The beds were purposely put up high so that you can look out over the water from the comfort of your bed. We describe the room as having a large soaking tub, which can also be seen in photos of the room. We do offer waterfront rooms with showers, and if guests do not like the open romantic tubs or are shy about their mates being present, we do have shower rooms available instead of the one that this couple selected.

I called to make a reservation and asked wheather we can bring two toddlers. I know it is a weird question to ask to begin with. Who would think you can't bring your kids for your family trip? The guy on the phone said only two people in one room. I told him they are only three and one year old. He said it doesn't matter and recommended me to split with my wife for two rooms with each kid. Wow, what kind of family trip would that be. We want to spend more time together as a family when we take a trip. Parents, stay away from this place if you plan to bring your kids. I was hoping to stay here and experience the great things that people talk about. Too bad. I hope more friendly guy would be on the phone too for their business. I understand he is doing his job, but he could be more friendly to explain their unreasonable policy on the phone.

Recently we stayed at the Captain's Inn in Moss Landing, California. We were very impressed by the cheerful and friendly greeting of the innkeeper Donna. She was very helpful and also available to take care of any needs we might have. We stayed upstairs in the main house in a lovely room with a comfortable queen bed. We asked Donna for dinner suggestions and then walked down the street to the Haute Enchilada. The dinner was excellent. The next morning was even better with a fabulous breakfast cooked by Donna. We had a wonderful selection of fresh fruit, smoothies, muffins, and cooked to order omelets. Then we walked a short distance to get on the Elkhorn Slough Safari that we had reserved a month earlier. What a marvelous trip that was! Captain Yahn and a naturalist took us on a pontoon boat through the slough. We saw so many different types of birds. Also many sea lions, harbor seals, and the adorable sea otters. Two of the otters were carrying babies on their chests. Another was cracking shellfish on a rock lying on its chest! We learned so much about the history and geology of the area. This is a trip not to be missed. Later we walked (again a short distance) to the nearby beach. We wish we could have stayed longer. We will definitely stay again in the Captain's Inn, and we feel that Donna is an amazing innkeeper!!!

Room Tip: The rooms in the boathouse have a marvelous view of the slough. I think they would be worth the ext...

This is my favorite B&B ever. Highly recommend for those who enjoy being close to nature in a quiet setting with full amenities. Awesome view from the uniquely appointed rooms and delicious breakfast and snacks. Excellent place for a romantic getaway (e.g. anniversary with in-room massage) or to spend a wonderful weekend with girlfriends, as I most recently did. Elkhorn Slough Safari is a must!

We had a fabulous weekend at this B&B in April. They pay close attention to the details that can make a good vacation a great vacation. We especially appreciated the breakfasts that accommodated our dietary restrictions- deliciously! The bed was soo comfortable and the rooms have interesting decorations, not the usually stock paintings. We wish we could have stayed longer.

Room Tip: We stayed in the main house facing the road. If you need it to be super quiet ask for the boat house...

I spent a very memorable night here recently, not my first visit. My only regret is that I could only stay one day! The Inn Keeper, Donna, was very welcoming and a great cook! Be sure not to miss the Elkhorn Slough safari - great for bird and otter watching. The Inn is cozy and comfortable and the Boat house rooms have great views and showers. Only minutes to Monterey and a much nicer place to stay than some big hotel there.

Room Tip: The Boathouse is the most fun. Rooms in the historic bldg are charming and authentic.

I had a very enjoyable stay at the Inn made even more pleasant by Donna. The beach setting and quaint cozy rooms were deluxe. I would definitely recommend staying here again.

For an extra bonus, try the nearby Phil's fish market. The food was amazing and they had a live band. Not to be missed to create a great overall experience.
