“Fine with Minor Eco Complaints”
Reviewed 11 February 2012

This is exactly what you expect from a Quality Inn so on that level you can't really complain. It's quiet, the rooms are clean and the staff is polite if not friendly.

My only real complaint, and this is going to strike some people as silly but it's meaningful to me, is that it's kind of a wasteful establishment. My towels were replaced in full every day in spite of the 'a hanging towel means I'm still using it' rule. I had used a bar of soap for just two days when it was discarded and replaced by a new one. And in the breakfast area, all of the plastic cups were individually wrapped in plastic, which I found to be absurd. It would be easier and cheaper for them to do better in this arena, and it wouldn't hurt anybody, except the most die hard global warming deniers.

This is the closed hotel to the main gate of NASA Ames. It is about $100 per night less expensive than major brand name properties nearby. Those always sell out first while space is generally available here. The rooms are spacious, clean and include free wifi. The included breakfast is basic but is not well staffed and items often run out daily before staff recognizes the need. Small irritations include no butter, only spread; no salsa for scrambled eggs, only hot sauce and ketchup; white sauce too runny to be edible. Rooms are handicap accessible but the toilet is not comfort height. There are no restaurants within walking distance most days. One is open Thurs-weekend, lunch and dinner. Sounds whiny but little things do add up for road warriors hence the average rating.

Room clean and large - breakfast not too bad for the US. Walking distance to Shoreline if no Taxi's are about (about 15 minutes).

Staff seemed lazy, while at the same time trying to act helpful.

Asked to be moved to another room. Was told; 2 rooms available on second floor, but, next to the freeway. So, I thought... " "bar noise until 2am or freeway noise all night". Bar went way past 2:00am.

Blow dryer blew cold air. Had to call housekeeping to bring one that worked!

Got to breakfast about 8 am to find housekeeping employees loading up trays of food for themselves. The hot food was gone. had to wait for staff to cook more sausage, biscuits and scrambled eggs. Pastries were PLAIN bagel, PLAIN mini donuts. Coffee was EXCELLENT.

Staff was LOUD banging pans when refilling food... As if they ere mad. Same person who cooked the food; I saw her empty the trash, with the same hands that cooked it! NASTY! THEN, bought groceries were brought in while we were eating! Staff used a nasty guest luggage cart (the one you put your luggage on to load and unload at your car and into your room) and drug it through the eating area (which is Very small) right next to our table. They pulled it into the area where they cooked the food and left it there. What if a guest needed to use it? But, that really isn't the point. The point is, those luggage carts are nasty!!

We stayed for a total of four nights at the Quality Inn in Mountain View, which we chose for its proximity to the Shoreline Ampitheatre. The first two nights were really decent - we had a small suite, which was clean, roomy, and comfortable. A couple of minor housekeeping problems - missing lightbulb and a sink drain stopper which was stuck in the closed position - were resolved quickly by in-house maintenance.

For the second two nights, we were shunted off to a handicapped room on the second (!) floor. This room was a nightmare. The bathroom floor was dirty; there was nowhere to put toiletries; the cover to the floor drain was loose, which would have trapped anyone in a wheelchair; and the toilet wouldn't flush. Fortunately, I was able to resolve the toilet problem by removing the tank lid, then giving a good upward pull on the flapper lever. The seat in the shower was covered in stains, but fortunately we didn't have to suffer the ignominy of using it.

Breakfast was adequate, but the breakfast room is woefully small. There are three additional tables outside, which did help. We saw many guests taking their breakfast back to their rooms.

Parking, as another reviewer has noted, is mostly underneath the building, but is in a safe, well-lit garage, with elevator access to the upper floors.

The hotel is very easy to find from the Moffett Boulevard exit off of US 101. It's convenient to San Jose Airport, which is a lot easier to get in and out of than SFO. If you continue up Moffett Boulevard, it becomes Castro Street, which is the main shopping and dining area in Mountain View, with lots of free parking. It's also about 1/4 mile from California route 85, which gives you quick access to El Camino Real and I-280.

All in all, if we had stayed in our first room all four nights, this would have been about a 4 1/2 star review. The handicapped room was so awful, though, that this is now a three star review. And just out of curiosity, why would a wheelchair accessible room be on the second floor, as far away from the elevator as possible?

Room Tip: Unless you specifically need one, avoid at all costs the "accessible" rooms.

We weren't impressed at first when we walked in to this hotel, but after we settled in and had a good night's sleep, we were quite happy. The location is convenient to NASA, the San Jose airport (12 miles away), and Google's headquarters, and downtown Mountain View, where there are many restaurants and a light rail station to downtown San Jose, the Great Mall, and other nearby points. There is a free underground parking garage and with an elevator to the lobby. The breakfast was quite adequate.

On the down side, there is no shuttle service ANYWHERE (we even went to the Ramada next door to see if they had a shuttle, but they do not either), so you need a rental car, and town would be at least 1/2 an hour to walk to. The hotel faces on the Bayshore Freeway, so be sure to get a room well in the back. (We did and did not hear any noise.)

Room Tip: Be sure to get a room in the back to get away from freeway noise.
