We had no difficulty getting in on a Sunday evening -- we expected a large crowd. Parking was no problem, and the building looked quaint from the outside (the inside did not disappoint). The Host seated us promptly and Ramiro (waiter) was cordial. We stayed stocked with warm sourdough and garlic butter throughout the meal. Our Salmon Florentine was large and tasty.

We noticed other dishes around us . . . the large pizza was huge, and fed 6 people at a nearby table. The medium pizza served 3 people are another table, with pizza left to take home. Still another table featured huge calzones. The FJL menu is extensive . . . .salads, appetizers, pizzas, and pastas.

FJL did not disappoint. I'm glad we dined there, and we would dine there again.

It's been several years since we've been to this Italian eatery, and it was quite a delight to conclude it's gotten better over the years, expanding into new space and to other Bay Area locations. Want great pizza? Go here, it's worth the wait if busy, though seating had greatly expanded since we were last here. Want pasta? Cannelloni or lasagna? You got it, all here and all way above average. Got young kids? No problem, they are welcome and what youngster doesn't like pasta? OK, I get it, you want them to have "greens" too? Salads are abundant as well. While we didn't sample the wine selections this trip, I find it easy to believe that they have some wonderful Chiantis or whatever you have in mind. Maybe they'd expand to Seattle???

Our Mountain View relatives had never been to FJL and we were looking for a nice restaurant that handled private events, so our mission was twofold. We were seated promptly by the staffer at the host stand. When we told him we were also interested in talking to whomever handled banquets, his English faltered. He pointed out an area of the restaurant that served as a banquet area for groups of 30 or less and went off to get us a banquet menu, but not a banquet manager.
Our capable and very pleasant server said the restaurant manager handled banquet arrangements and he would send him over...but never did. Was the staff not trained to jump on thousand plus dollar events? Was the restaurant so busy with regular business that it didn't really want banquets drawing away from staff and regular guest profits? Or was the communications among staff and management so faulty (a major warning sign that banquet arrangements might also be so disorganized)?
Now for the food. Everyone loved the sausage bread and Caprese salad appetizers. A few of us ordered entrees that were also on the banquet menu to see what they were like. My mostacioli di Bara (pieces of filet mignon and mushrooms in a Gorgonzola brandy sauce) was rich and satisfying. My wife seemed OK with the linguini seafood dish and our youngest diner was OK with the manicotti. One of our group ordered mussels and wasn't impressed. Another ordered the chicken piccata (which we all tasted and found the chicken to be overdone and tough). Our teenage granddaughter was very unhappy with her mahi mahi salad, but it wasn't called to my attention until the end of the dinner. I thought she was just being fussy, but when I checked the fish I agreed that it was "off." It also was over cooked, had a fishy smell and a bad aftertaste. Had I known earlier in the meal I would have sent it back and had her order something else. There is no reason for serving a customer fish that had turned bad. Over cooking it doesn't cure the malady. Fish that smells fishy is not fresh.
The restaurant is very attractive. It feels like you're entering an Italian garden. The food is typical neighborhood southern Italian fare, much like you'd get everywhere...but in upscale Mountain View we expected better. All in all, we were disappointed and scratched the place off our banquet venue search. It's a shame. It wouldn't have taken much to get our business.
The pizzas looked good, however.

While I no longer think that their pizzas deserve any more "best in the" awards, their food and wine selection are very good. They have one of the better Osso Bucco dishes that are less than the "$$$" price range. Parking's good, access to the restaurant is pretty easy.
