Owner description: One of Napa’s classic wine estates, Trefethen is still a hidden gem. Easy to find, but only if you’re looking. Our entry is on Oak Knoll Avenue, tucked away from the crowds of Highway 29. The driveway John Trefethen used to land his plane on runs through the middle of our vineyard, over the ground we have tended since 1968. On August 24, 2014, a 6.0 earthquake rocked Napa Valley and Trefethen to the core and left our cherished historic winery leaning 4 feet to the west. We have spent 2½ years working on a full restoration, including a modern seismic retrofit. Originally constructed in 1886, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building is ready to stand sentinel over Napa Valley once again. Please come visit soon! Reservations are not required but are suggested Reservations are required for all groups of 6 or more. At this time we are unable to accommodate anyone under the age of 21, including infants and children.

“Great wine”
Reviewed 19 November 2011

We really enjoyed the wine, and even bought some of their higher-end selections. The service that day was not as personal as some of the other vineyards, especially given the fact that we were buying multiple bottles.

“Picturesque and personalized”
Reviewed 13 November 2011

The entrance drive to the Trefethen tasting room is lined with well marked (ex: Cab Sauv 2005, Chardonnay 2008, etc.) estate vines which completely get you in the Napa mood. Trefethen is located in one of the southern most districts, Oak Knoll and slightly off the beaten path. Trefethen was our first stop of the day so we were its first visitors. (NOTE: If you are really into learning about the wine making process and vineyards get the wineries early when they open. We had our best experiences at the first few wineries of the day.) We were greeted by friendly staff members and a beautiful golden retriever. The tasting room was full out decorated for Halloween, an event that looked like we were sorry to have missed. Shannon, our wine specialist, was a true delight. She taught us about glassware, storage and of course the varietals of Trefethen wine. She was enthusiastic and had charming anecdotal stories to tell us that made our time there even that much more enjoyable. The standard Estate tasting fee was $15 (contrary to the Tasting Passport pdf file on the website), but was well worth it even when shared. The tasting went beyond the standard list. All of the grapes are estate grown (they don't buy grapes from other growers) which is somewhat unique. They also had very nice styrofoam shippers for a very reasonable $6 - a must have for bringing back wine on a plane or shipping it home. There are tours and other tasting experiences available as listed on their website.
