Trefethen Family Vineyards

Owner description: One of Napa's classic wine estates, Trefethen is a hidden gem. Easy to find, but only if you're looking, our entry is on Oak Knoll Avenue, tucked away from the crowds of Highway 29. John Trefethen used to land his plane on the driveway during runs through the middle of our vineyard, over the ground we have tended for over 40 years. Located at the grand entrance to Napa Valley, we are one of Napa's classic family wine estates. Stunning valley and vineyards vistas surround guests as they sample distinctive hand crafted estate wines. (Reservations required). We look forward to welcoming you.

“Yes yes yes!”
Reviewed 16 July 2010

Four of us wine tasted at Trefenthen Vineyard today (7/15/2010) and I would say after 15-20 tasting over the last week, this was in the top 5.

The cost was $25 or $10 depending on what wines you want to taste. I did the reserve list for $25 and my wife did the regular list. I enjoyed that I was able to sit at a table for the tasting. At the end of the day, it was nice to sit down.

Both were great and our server did a fantastic job.

We had a great time and will go back.

“A great choice if you love wine.”
Reviewed 23 May 2009

Trefethen produce great wines and happily the experience at the winery itself didn't disappoint. The wines were good, as always, and the staff friendly and attententive at this family-run winery. The property is simple but beautiful and the tasting room has a great atmosphere, neither too commerical nor too basic. Note that it is one of a handful of very good wineries that don't require reservations for a tasting, which is nice if you want flexibility in your itinerary for the day.

“The best stop our of 6!”
Reviewed 2 September 2008

Hubby and I were in Napa for only one day and I put Trefethen on my list based on Yelp reviews. This winery was the highlight of our day. We decided to share a $10 tasting and were glad we did...the pours are indeed generous. The grounds were beautiful, but the reason we loved it was the wine. I enjoyed the whites as much as the reds...in particular the Merlot, and I am not generally a Merlot fan....if we are back in Napa, I will surely be back here.

“All by its lonesome”
Reviewed 3 October 2007

What I liked best about this winery was the interior of the wine tasting facility. Nothing like seeing massive wood-carved tables and handsomely matched chairs in a private tasting room area.

You got the feeling you were in a special place for a special event yet it was only to taste some wine. Our pourer was bright and lively and provided us with good service.

Loved the crackers, chocolate and water served with the wine.

You can tell it is run by a proud family wanting to do things the right way.

Good place, good wine, good times

“Loved the wine, Hated the service”
Reviewed 4 October 2005

Just back from a weekend in Napa - 10 of us were celebrating a friend's 40th birthday. One of our stops included a tasting at Trefethen. While their wines are spectacular, the service and terrible attitudes will greatly diminish the experince. Specifically, we had trouble with a leaking cork on a $160 magnum of wine (just one of several purchases)and simply asked that it be replaced...instead of apologizing and correcting the issue, the bratty little girl behind the counter made a huge fuss (embarassing herself and the winery in front of many customers). I bought the wine for our group to enjoy with a picnic lunch, but the Trefethen experience simply put a damper on our spirits. Most would agree that this winery produces some exceptional wine, however there are MANY competitors with this talent...and they have the people skills to keep customers coming back. My hat is off to 'Mike' who came out of the back, recognized the situation that his foolish colleague had created and finally replaced the wine. I would encourage people to avoid the hassle at Trefethen and visit one of the other 400 friendly producers.
