Owner description: Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

“Good Wine and Good Art”

We visited this using TripAdvisor recommendations as a guide. Loved the wine. Some of the local, proprietary wines will be part of a wine-based fundraiser later this month. So, the wine is terrific, and, yes, it is totally worth it for the eclectic art collection.

“Worth a visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 June 2014

This was one of my favorite stops. The tour is so informative & not just about wine making. We had a wonderful tour guide; it was a weekday so there were just 3 of us in the group. The gardens are beautiful and the California poppies in the old vineyard were luscious.

The tasting was reasonable; they have a nicer than average gift shop.

The art was too modern for my taste but definitely worth a stroll thru.

I don't think I'll ever forget the flaming typewriter or the story behind it!

“Awesome art gallery”

This is a super art gallery to visit, no charge to come in! The gift shop was interesting also. It was a pleasant drive not far from where we stayed the Vino Bello Resort. The grounds were pleasant also.

“Some amazing artwork”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2014

The Hess Collection is one of the most interesting private art collections anywhere. And, it is free to anyone who wishes to visit. There is a clear sense of preciseness in the design of the gallery building itself and an equally clear sense of commitment to a limited number of individual artists, all of whom are internationally important in their own right. It is a must see on any tour of the Napa Valley area.

“Adventure Off The Beaten Path”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

Where wine and modern art meet. Incredible setting. We skipped the wine making tour and headed to the galleries.
Something for everyone and you'll have something to talk about. Choose the tasting room or treat yourself to tasting and nibbles under the arbor overlooking the mountain meadow garden.
