Owner description: Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

We visited The Hess Collection on a lovely fine day... the drive there is also worthwhile ! We used Trip Advisor to find this as we had a gap in our day. The collection itself is free to view...which is a bonus... and WELL DONE to the owners for that !. Modern art is one of those things... you either like the pieces or you dont. We saw some great pieces and some not so ( in our opinion)...but that is what modern art does to people.. Wine tasting is charged for...common in the US,, but not so in my home country ! Wines were very nice and i did purchase a bottle. (limited space as I was travelling, kept me to one).
Bottom line... its a good short visit location for adults... don't take young children...they'll be bored and if not well controlled could damage very expensive pieces. .

This is a beautiful winery in the hills of Napa. We were with a group tour, so we had a guide assigned us who began by providing us a nice crisp white wine and then walking us around the property giving us the history of the winery. We then stopped at a table outside for tastings of more wines. We were finally released to visit the art exhibit and could go to the tasting room for any additional tastings. I took many pictures of this beautiful winery, and we thoroughly enjoyed the majority of their wines. The staff was friendly and helpful and the tasting fees very reasonable. I highly recommend a visit. If you do not go with a group, just be forewarned that you will drive a steep and winding road to the winery, so plan this as a first stop or have a designated driver.

We booked a guided wine tour because we didn't want to deal with driving. This was one of my least favorite wineries we visited. I love the winery itself, its really cute but I personally didn't care for the art collection or the wine. It was 100 degrees in Napa that day and it was our third winery, so that could also have something to do with the fact that I didn't like it that much.

We had no plans to visit this winery until a staff member at our B&B recommended it. The winery is located just outside Napa along a scenic drive in the hills. The staff were great and really made our tasting fun! My wife fell in love with the Orange Muscat and bought 3 bottles! There is no need to make an appointment which is a big plus and one of the reasons we decided to stop here on our way out of time. We tried to avoid the large Napa wineries however this winery really did have a quaint independent vibe even though its quite large.

The art collection here is a world class collection which is superbly curated and the owner has a clear idea of what his collection is trying to say. The wines not bad too
