Owner description: Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

“Excellent choice for anyone traveling thru wine country”

After reading about Hess on Trip Advisor, we decided to make the drive on our way out of Napa toward the coast for phase 2 of our Nor Cal trip. The estate is beautiful and secluded. The wine is wonderful and the art collection is very impressive. When you put all of these together, you get a truly remarkable experience. Take one of the free walking tours to get the history, taste in their beautiful tasting room and then spend an hour + taking in the art. The garden area is also worth a stroll through. Seemed like Hess offers a variety of more personal and/or private tasting options...in the cask room and out in the garden so ask if you're interested. They offer small plates as well if you're hungry. Well worth the short drive from downtown Napa.

“Napa Valley Winetour”

I visited The Hess Collection as a first stop on our wintery tour. It's a lovely winery with big grounds, great wine and a nice shop where you can buy wine and souvenirs.

“Hidden Gem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 August 2014

Hess Collection - very hidden and out of the way for a popular vineyard in Napa. The Grounds are typically beautiful but with a modern geometric garden entry. When we went in the tasting room suggested we go see the art 1st and then come back for rating. He was right. The art collection is GREAT - Even though I'm an Impressionist guy the modern art was great. Especially this piece of a bunch of sticks held together with thorn 'pins'. I'll try and attach a photo. Amazing.

Wine was good to very good, Bought about 4 bottles. Had a sale going on.

“Art, Food, and Wine”

What a treat! A really unique art tour before one of the best food and wine pairing experiences, ever. Very accomplished chef prepared perfect mini plates of real food (not cheese and crackers) with their very fine wine.

“Fine Introduction to Napa”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2014

Impressive art gallery, both in quantity and quality, though a little bit all over the place and lacking a consistent theme or anything. The wines were better than I thought they'd be and better than I'd heard, yet not as expensive as I expected. Staff was very informative and helpful and certainly the best aspect of the place, which could be very snobbish very easily. Don't miss the old-time film reel.
