Some friends of ours invited us to meet at Tacos La Playita, their favorite place for Mexican food. We had never heard of it, even though it's right in our neighborhood, hidden in a plain old strip mall. This has been our friends' favorite ever since it was originally a taco truck. Now it's a casual restaurant, and I mean casual. Order from the counter, and either eat in the nondescript dining room with kitchy decor, or take it to go. If you eat in, the kind staff will bring it to your table, along with chips and salsa.
The menu (on overhead boards) is extensive, including daily specials. Choose your meat from among the more-familiar-to-Americanos beef, chicken, and pork; or the adventurous choices of tongue, stomach, and tripe. Weekends feature menudo and birria. This is not a "one flavor" place--everything we ordered had a distinct flavor, and everything tasted fantastic. Portions are generous, especially the burritos. My chile verde came with very good beans and rice on the side.
Prices are super-reasonable, especially for Napa. Many dinners with rice and beans were around 8 to 12 dollars. A al carte tacos and burritos were 4 to 7 dollars.
This could become the food in our neighborhood that we crave, tempting us to stop by on the way home for dinner to go. I can hardly wait to return to try my favorite, chile relleno. Next time I'll submit an updated report with pictures.
