“Warm and personal service!”
Reviewed 30 October 2010

We stayed here for 2 nights on our honeymoon. We arrived late but the owner still greeted us warmly and mentioned that he was expecting us. We mentioned about some difficulties in booking the hot air balloon ride, and he offered to help us call the company using his phone.

The next day unfortunately, the weather was bad and we couldn't proceed. The owner got to know about this as he saw us coming back, and recommended some tours, also offering to help us call the tour company. But never pushy!

We required some help in printing tickets for a theme park which we were going to later on in our trip and approached him again. Though it was already night time, he didn't hesitate to help us and even invited us to his house so that we could use his computer to print the tickets.

Very helpful and personal service! Only bad thing about the hotel was the bath tub.. It didn't look clean enough for us to want to soak in it.

We were very happy with this hotel. We wanted to save money on the hotel so that we could spend more on food and wineries - so it worked out perfectly for us! It's definitely a no frills place, but you really can't beat the price, especially for the location, right at the bottom of Silverado Trail - it was perfect. After reading some of the reviews here we were pretty nervous but everything turned out fine. There was no smell (and I am very sensitive to smells). The room was a good size, with a little hall/foyer when you walk in and another little area with a desk near the bed. Everything was very clean, and the owner was very nice. There were plenty of breakfast choices.... cereal, bagels, bread, pastries, orange juice, fruit, oatmeal and coffee. Also, we actually got free reserve tasting at Frank Family Vineyards because we were staying here (a $50 value!).

My daughter and I stayed at the Discovery Inn in mid-August for 5 nights - I had read reviews about unpleasant smells in the rooms, but we certainly didn't notice it. However the carpets were very dirty, as we noticed very quickly as we wandered around barefoot a lot, so perhaps they were cleaned and why those of you staying after our visit noticed "chemical" smells !! The owner was very helpful, unobtrusive, asked if we wanted clean towels/beds made etc - which suits a lot of people, rather than being disturbed or being provided with clean towels when perhaps not necessary. The two beds were very comfortable, no problem with the mattresses, perhaps newer than some ? We had been staying in KOA campsites, sleeping in sleeping bags on soft mattresses on wooden frames, but these rooms were fine. It was nice having the hallway type room for keeping all our extra bits and pieces, the fridge was an excellent addition, bathroom good, with nice shower. The owner's daughter was very helpful - we arrived quite late in the evening and with the American habit of eating very early wondered whether we would find somewhere to eat. She recommended Los Compadres, less that 5 minutes drive away, which was excellent and open til late, ie after 10pm !!!! Good food and nice atmosphere. Although on Silverado Trail, we were not disturbed by traffic noise. We drove into Cerrito del Norte to park the car and get the BART train into San Francisco, which was easy, it was also conveniently located for any wine tasting - we did ours on rented bikes from Yountville, which I recommend - take a picnic lunch and plenty of water !! The breakfast area was small, guess could eat outside when not foggy first thing - we just took it all back to our room !! Quite enough for us ie cereals, fruit juice, pastries, toast etc. All in all we were very happy with this motel, bearing in mind some B & B's charge over $150 per night and we were on a slightly lower budget and out every day !! Liked the painted slightly Mexican feel to the buildings. Would recommend splashing out and eating at CIA (Culinary Institute of America) in Helena - now that was special - so we saved on the accommodation but ate and drank well - then had an RV for two weeks, which was also an experience - all good !!

If you're looking for a [relatively] cheap hotel in Napa, then this is the place to go. It's a budget hotel so keep that in mind. It's clean enough and definitely a no-frills place but it's the cheapest place we could find in the area. Also, it's only about 15 minutes from some of the wineries. The gentleman that owns it was very accommodating whenever we needed more pillows, blankets, etc. The continental breakfast includes oatmeal, cereal, bagels, etc. Overall, it was just what we were looking for. There was a TV in the room too.

We didn't realize this was such a busy time for Napa when we made reservations a month ago, and finally settled on DIscovery after finding everything else full. I figured as long as it was clean I wouldn't complain. As many have mentioned, there was a terrible smell (urine). The owner stated he had just cleaned the carpet 10 days ago, which might have actually brought out the smell if there was old dog urine. (I didn't realize pets were allowed until reading other reviews). The owner sprayed room deoderizor at 5pm, but by bedtime it was back. The next day I bought a $1 can of spray at a store, and after several applications I was able to go to sleep. The best part of the hotel was feeling like we were able to buy a few more bottles of wine for the money we saved on lodging.

OK - I've seen more than a few people denigrate this place for various cheesy reasons - but, let me try and be objective about this.
Firstly, it's an inexpensive place. You get a clean room and bathroom, quiet location (we had room #7 in the back - and got to see the deer!), a firm bed, and not much else. We stayed three nights and had zero complaints. OK, yes, when we walked in, there was a strong cleaning agent odor. After leaving the door open for 15 minutes to get a nice breeze through the room and the smell was much reduced. And my wife is highly (HIGHLY) sensitive to strong odors. If it had been as bad as some state, I guarantee you, I'd have to start looking for a new place.
I don't need wifi, (I'm on VACATION!), so I didn't get to access it. The manager was very pleasant, even getting the room ready for us just after noon when we arrived.
We wanted an inexpensive, decent quality room in Napa and got exactly that. I wanted to spend my money on wine and food, not an overpriced "spa" experience. The Discovery Inn delivered exactly what was promised. I highly recommend this place, but it's just a great hotel that gives you a perfect base of operations for Napa and Sonoma Valleys - and Bodega Bay too along the coast - less than an hour away and a cool getaway from the Highway 29 crowds. Also - stay off 29! Take Silverado Trail, much less traveled and a great selection of wineries heading north to St. Helena. And Mumm (champagne) too.

The room we got smelled immediately upon entering. The smell was an excessive carpet freshener type of smell. We accepted since we had a dog along and figured it was "the" dog room. The carpet was also quite dirty. The price was extensive for a room in the valley and they charged a pet fee with no benefits. The bathroom was very dated. If you are over five feet tall you'll need to bend to see your face in the mirror. The shower had good hot water and pressure. The toilet was an old style round type. The owner/operator wasn't to friendly but OK. The continental breakfast consisted of two canisters of dry cereal and a pre-packaged sweet roll. We didn't try it or coffee and instead went to Starbucks that was down the road . There wasn't a pet area and no dog bags provided for pickup. The road noise from Silverado trail wasn't too bad.
