We have been going to the Red Hen for years, way before they moved to their present location. We had seen an advertisement in the paper that they had a new chef and a new menu so were excited to see how it was. BIG MISTAKE! The food was absolutely awful.
Start with the salsa.. it tasted like it just came out of a No.10 can. Not fresh, not tasty, and really thick like thickeners had been added. Very bad. Their salsa used to be the best, fresh and tasty.
I ordered two tacos, one shredded beef and one chicken and they looked different but tasted the same..blah. No spice, no flavor. I would have added salsa but it was so bad it wouldn't have helped. The beans were watery, cold and tasteless and the rice (also cold) tasted like it had been boiled in tomato juice only for color, again blah!
My husband ordered the chile relleno which was cold along with his cold the rice and beans. The cheese was not even melted. At least they could have microwaved it to melt the cheese inside.
They are now using pablano/pastilla chiles in their rellenos which we usually prefer over anaheim chiles so that would have a plus if the food tasted good.
The one star is for the beer which was SUPPOSED to be cold and the service which was decent. As fast as the food came out it is hard to believe it could have gotten so cold. We will not be back. Their chef is certailny not an improvement.

The Red Hen Cantina
4175 Solano Ave (Old Cal State Hiway 29)
Napa, CA

Busy, Busy, Busy Why do people want to rush an experience like this? It is beyond me. A lot of Napa cooking is loaded with Cilantro or Hot Pepper but her only if you ask for it.
A general rule of thumb at a Mexican Food Cafe' is to order a Margarita or Beer and try to consume a Quesadilla. Do that here - and remember: Busy means delays - this is NOT fast food joint. Folks here are friendly, some are a bit crocked but all are happy except for those rare types who think they are doing this popular place a favor by just being there.

We have Fajitas and sometimes have Quesadillas; split a 12 oz beer or water. Red Hen serves Pepsi products. Think about it, leave the chips alone. Those things spoil the appetite, don'cha know!

Delicious, reasonable prices, loved the salsa! The waitstaff was very attentive. Located next to Ivy Hotel for convenience.

The Red Hen Cantina has been around a long time and is a fun place to go with children. But, if you are going for great Mexican food there are better places in Napa. The service was slow and they kept bring a lot of chips and salsa before the dinner to keep us busy. My Crab Enchilada was a bit soggy and tasted like it was hanging around the kitchen. The whole beans were not fresh and had to come from a can.

I have gone to the Red Hen Cantina 4 or 5 times. Some friends and I have gone for happy hour. The staff is quite accommodating and the service is good and prompt. I had the unfortunate experience though of the bartender giving my credit card to someone else by mistake. (Luckily this person was honest and gave it back the next day.) It was inconvenient because I had to leave town, but it all eventually worked out and the Red Hen Manager was nice enough to give us a free meal for my trouble. Red Hen has good food, good drinks and great guacamole. Easy parking too.
