This place has a lot going for it. Strangely enough, the Napa River and downtown Napa are not two of them. The Napa River is a narrow tidal strand and is either filled with turgid brown water or, if the tide is out, there is a lot of unappealing moss and mud. That's the way tidal rivers are. On the opposite bank is a railroad storage yard and an auto repair place It's not pretty. There is a "river walk" but it's a lot of cold concrete and stairs with little activity except right at the inn. The river banks at low tide are frankly a bit disgusting. So don't go for romantic river views. They ain't there. Also, downtown Napa is very uneven. Some blocks are completely deserted. It looks like it is awaiting a second or third redevelopment. You can cover the whole area, in depth and on foot, as you walk past scores of vacant store fronts, in less than an hour. We had the impression that the whole downtown area was just hanging on. The Ox Bow Market is within walking distance (not in downtown) but is nothing special. Tourist traffic all over Napa was pretty light for the high summer season, even with great weather.

All this negative stuff having been said, this is a very good place to stay. It's all first class really. The rooms are large, beautiful and fresh. The staff is very accommodating. Parking is free and check in is easy. The free morning breakfast is delivered to your room and is a real treat. The two restaurants adjoining the hotel are excellent. The Napa General Store is right in the building and is a fun stop.

There is very little traffic congestion in Napa and it is at the beginning of two wine trails. This is an easy, convenient place to get in and out of if you are going to Napa for wine tasting. We would recommend it based on the ambiance. Ignore the river.

Stayed one night based on reviews. Nice amenites and well furnished rooms. Clean and comfy beds. But none of that matters if you cannot get any sleep because of the noise of the person above you. Although we had Bigfoot staying in the room above us, I could tell that anyone walking made the floor creak and bang. I could hear his toilet flush, I could hear when he went out the front door, when he opened his patio door, when he rolled his luggage, and when he argued with his wife/gf until 3 a.m. SO, get a room on the top floor only (3rd floor). Dont waste money for a "river view"--the Napa River along this section looks more like a dirt canal with a used car lot and industrial zone on the opposite side.

My best friend and I stayed at the Napa River Inn for a 2-night "Best Friend Get-a-way" to visit some of our favorite wineries. We had some challenges leaving town and getting there, so by the time we did check in, we were a little harried to say the least. Walking up to the counter and checking in we were greeted by a very friendly gentleman who asked us how we were doing. We jokingly said that we were fine now that we were here and described some of our "drama" laughingly. He said that he hoped they could make our experience better since we were returning guests. Free upgraded room! Score!

We walked in to our room - gorgeous! It was in the historic Hatt Hall, original wood flooring, bathroom had a claw foot tub and gorgeous vanity. Fireplace, sitting area, just everything was perfect. There was a bottle of wine sitting there with a note from the management welcoming us back. As always from past experience, the room was immaculate. Everything was just so.

One of my favorite parts of staying at Napa River Inn is the breakfast that is brought up to your room each morning. The breakfast is included and is prepared by Sweetie Pies Bakery which is in the same building. You get a pastry, choice between a breakfast sandwich, granola parfait or the quiche du jour, and you also get freshly squeezed juice or fresh fruit. You just tell them what time to bring it and they bring it right up. And it's all included in your room fees!

The location is great too, it's right on the Riverfront and walking distance to downtown restaurants like ZuZu, Downtown Joe's. Morimoto Napa, etc.

This is the only place that I will stay in Napa. If they are booked, I don't go. They have made such an impression and have proven to me that they take Customer Service seriously. If you want a great Napa experience, stay here. It's that simple.

We stayed at the Napa River Inn last September and were so impressed that we included it for our summer trip in 2010. I have 2 small dogs that are family and the welcome basket that is in the room upon arrival was most welcome. We got to stay in the same room both last year and this year so felt like we had come home. I can't say enought about the friendliness for the staff, the effeciency of housekeeping, general overall cleanliness, etc. The included breakfast from Sweetie Pies is fabulous! Having traveled world wide - the Napa River Inn ranks among the best in my estimation. I look forward to my next visit. I think of it as a 5 star, 5 paw hotel!

I only stayed one night here but would love to go back. I found it very quaint and easy to get to. A few downtown restaurants and cute shops onsite.
Even got a picture in Sweetie Pie's with an orb-supposedly it is haunted.
