Had a good day out with 6 Brazilians and 2 Americans. Started off with a drive into the hills to Hess Winery. The grounds were beautiful as was the house and it’s history. We tried several wines, didn’t like any of them. We then tried a cab sav that was $185 a bottle. This wasn’t part of the tour. It was ok but nothing special.
On the way to Merryvale we had a nice cheese platter on the bus. Merryvale was a nice setting and we had lunch there and watched the wine train go past. Purchased a bottle there.
Third on tour was a barrel tasting at provenance. Again nice people who educated you about wine, but for us the wine was very average and expensive.
Finally we went to Razi which was the smallest on the tour but the owner was knowledgeable. They had the best designed wine bottles and we purchased a bottle of cab sav that was delicious.
The guide was good throughout the day, knew a lot about wine himself and he owned a few acres too that he sells to various wineries.
Worth doing to get to know the area and so you don’t have to drive. Think there are better wineries though.
