Pros: Rooms are as described on the hotel's web site. Large and comfortable (good beds, okay linens) with mini-fridge (but no freezer), 4-cup coffee maker (coffee and non-dairy creamer provided), in-room safe, iron and ironing board, desk area, TV (non-HD channels). Small gym with decent equipment, good business centre with 4 computers and free printing. The pool area is quite nice, equipped with good seating at round tables and loungers (but no umbrellas for lounge chairs), towels (need to be replenished more frequently) and a hot tub. Each floor has ice and vending machines (snacks and soft drinks). In the lobby there is a Keurig machine with off-brand coffee and tea pods available in the morning. Laundry is $2 to wash, $2 to dry and detergent and fabric softener is $2. That room could be improved. You must go to the front desk to get change.

This property meets and often exceeds expectations because of the staff. The front desk, housekeeping and cleaning/maintenance staff do a great job. Anything not cleaned up immediately was due to a spill not yet noticed.

Cons: The location leaves much to be desired. Back facing rooms have views of transport trucks and trains and there is definite noise in the early morning on weekdays. The air conditioner is very loud (so much so that I had to turn up the TV to hear it when it would blast). There was one late night partier next door that I could clearly hear in my room…only then was I glad to have a loud air conditioner to drown them out. No noise the next day. I didn't complain but expect others did, as it was quiet the next night. There is a restaurant bar/across from the property (Goodies) that was decent, an "In and Out Burger" restaurant (quintessential and very popular in California - cheap and good), a Denny's restaurant just up the street and within a 5-10 minute drive of Walmart, Best Buy, etc. The hotel is good value for the amenities relative to the cost but I wouldn't suggest the top reason is the proximity to San Diego attractions or for walking around. Wifi service in all areas of the hotel was bad and should be improved dramatically.

Congratulations to the staff who were always friendly and professional. They do the BW chain proud.

This is one of the best, Best Western Plusses around!! Pretty new, clean, comfortable. Convenient to San Diego, Beaches and inland suburbs. 15 minutes from the beach. Close to a great walking/biking/running trailhead for a trail that circles the bay for miles. Boat marina nearby with nice restaurant/grill with outdoor seating. Also a public boat launch ramp and associated park with public fishing pier. Restaurant across the parking lot with entertainment and happy hour. In 'n Out Burger close by and Starbucks as well. What more can you need??

Only negative is that they have no breakfast. Do have coffee in the lobby though.

Overall, for San Diego, good value. Oh, and the staff are nice too!!

Room Tip: Some rooms have balconies. Wireless internet a bit slow at times.

No continental breakfast. Not enough coffee makers in lobby. Uncomfortable small square pillows. Beds too firm. Sheets rather rough. Good location for National City. Great live music across at Goodes. However would be nice if music played later. Would be nice for upon check in, someone would give information about hotel such as pool, elevators, laundry room, locations, hours etc.

We were staying at the KOA Chula Vista and need an extra two nites when wife found this nice hotel. Plenty of parking for our newly aquired trailer. Staff was excellent. Rooms were superior and very nicely appointed..very up to date. Beds very comfortable. Good location to check out Bablboa, Coronando and into downtown. Of course food would be a good thing.

This hotel is about five miles from the city of San Diego in an industrial area. Except an ok restaurant right next door there isn't anything else nearby so better do your grocery shopping in the city and bring it back. Room was clean, service was really good but wifi service was kind of spotty. Just know that if it was important to you. Finally get connected after several tries.

Overall, I would say that if you want to save a little money on hotels when visiting San Diego this is a good choice.

We had a good experience at this hotel. We stayed here for 3 nights. I am assuming that all the hotels in California are trying to conserve energy as the temperature throughout the hotel was warm. The room was clean and the staff could not have been more pleasant. The hotel is located right off I5, so it was easy to get where we were going. I called the front desk and asked for more towels and someone showed up with towels in less than 10 minutes. The WiFi was not the best. My biggest complaint is that when we did laundry at the hotel. The price on the washer and dryer was higher than we have experienced at other hotels throughout out travels in California. Also after putting the clothes through the dryer twice they were still wet, All in all it was a good experience.

Hotel staff are all excellent. Rooms are very comfortable. Goodies Restaurant is superb! free shuttle to/from San Diego trolley system a plus. Some problems exist: the "cold" water is tepid/warm; refrigerator had no control dial and froze everything put in it (easy thaw in the microwave, though); neither room nor front desk had telephone book; no information in the room about San Diego area attractions, restaurants, etc., and very little at front desk. But all of the major attractions in the area are reasonably close via Interstates 5 and 15. We stayed ten nights and saved over $1000 from a similar hotel in San Diego itself. That helps make Best Western PLUS Marina Gateway Hotel a great value!
