We stayed in the South Villas. The villas are well appointed and spacious. Restaurants are terrific, golf course (I played the South Course) was exceptional, with great caddies. The Villa pool has great breezes and views of the distant ocean. Only complaints are that it did take time to have phones answered by staff and there were lots of loud children at the pool both days we went. Short two mile walk to Crystal Cove beach and easy driving (or Uber) distance from lots of restaurants and other activities.

Room Tip: EVery room I saw had exceptional views.

We stay at Pelican Hill twice a year as a "staycation". The Villas are perfect for families. I wouldn't even bother getting a sitter and going to a restaurant because the room service is incredible. The pools at the Villas are gorgeous and kid-friendly. I highly recommend this resort!

For nearly 20 years, four couples have visited high end golf resorts each June. This year we visited Pelican Hill and found it excellent in every way. The lodging (4 bedroom villa overlooking golf course and Pacific) was wonderful. Golf courses were challenging and offered spectacular views. Restaurants in the resort were fantastic. Concierge (Jack) was very helpful in arranging reservations at local restaurants which were varied in cuisine and wonderful. Prompt shuttles made intra resort travel very easy. Taxis made travel to local towns easy.

All in all, a sensational (but expensive) trip.

It's a shame that this hotel isn't on any of the top 50 in the world lists. This is truly a great hotel and never disappoints. The little touches are nice...like the way they toast your bread in your room for you. The coliseum pool is truly a sight and the two golf courses are some of the most scenic in CA. Prices have definitely gone up since it first opened, but that is to be expected with its popularity. While some of the bungalows have better views than others, they are all amazingly appointed and with all of the olive trees throughout the property, it could definitely be mistaken for a getaway in Italy. 5 stars all the way around.

We decided to visit The Resort at Pelican HIll this past Labor Day weekend as a family to get some beach time in before the end of summer. We have vacationed at many great places as a family, like the Four Seasons Maui, Nevis, Punta Mita, and regularly visit the One and Only Palmilla.

This resort turned out to be a real letdown and absolutely nowhere in the same league as those outstanding properties. We understand any amazing resort can get a bad review on this site from someone who gives one star because their ahi tuna wasn't quite seared properly, but we're not like that, and comments below should give you a decent picture of our experience at Pelican.

Like a previous reviewer, we also arrived midmorning. We didn't have quite as good a result. We were told the front desk was working to get us into a room early, and would call us. After an hour, we hadn't heard anything. Called the front desk, same story again, they said they'd get back to us. Never heard anything. No communication. Finally we went to the front desk in person about two hours after arriving, and we were told the room was done, just waiting on an inspection. More on that later.

Meanwhile we went down to the Coliseum for the breakfast buffet. There was a line at the hostess stand. When we made it to the front of the line, we gave the hostess our name, and she said it would be just a couple of minutes before the table was ready. Fine. We stood there waiting, for about 15 minutes, and watched other people being seated ahead of us. My wife went back up to her to ask if our table was ready, and she was told that she had to go to the back of the line...she had forgotten our name and looked like she had never seen us! We were standing five feet away the entire time!

So we got to our table and ordered the buffet. The food was terrible. Some of the items were inedible, burnt, gone and not replaced, overcooked, or extremely bland. For a family of 5 the breakfast bill was about 180.00. 44 dollars for an adult breakfast buffet. Highly recommend skipping that!

We got into the room after noon, and despite the 'inspection' we were waiting for, there were a number of problems. The AC unit in the living portion of the suite wasn't working (it was warm this past weekend). We had an engineer come over, and he said he got it working, it just needed to be re-set, and he could feel cold air blowing out. We weren't so sure, but went with it. The next day we had to have them come back and try again, and this time electricians were over in our room for 2 hours, up in the crawlspace, and finally got it working. The lock on the front door was broken and needed to be fixed. The tub didn't drain properly. One of the sinks was clogged. The safe didn't work properly. Not what one would expect from a 5 star resort. It was like we had guest services on speed dial for two days. We don't want to spend vacation babysitting the hotel to get things fixed.

We did like the room. The bungalow suite was spacious in every aspect, and even though we had garden view we did enjoy a nice ocean view over the trees and rooftops.

We liked the shuttle service down to the beach, Crystal Cove. It's a little crowded down there since it's a state park, but it was a neat environment with old cottages, and the water was great. There are inshore rocks to look out for but otherwise the beach was great.

The pool, not so much. Maybe it's notable from an architectural standpoint, but we just didn't get the pool area. It's just a big circle. Nothing else. Absolutely not infinity edge. They say there are three pools at the resort, but the spa and villa pools don't really count in my opinion. There's just one option.

Granted it was a holiday weekend, but I went down there yesterday at 1030 and was told by Kevin the pool guard that there was a waiting list....seriously, one pool, and guests paying over a thousand dollars a night can't even use it??? The day before my wife tried to go down to the pool after we all got back from the beach, around 330, and was told by Kevin, 'there's no seats, good luck getting a spot'. Wow. Thanks for helping. It looked like many people were resort raiding taking up spots instead actual paying guests; try wrist bands if necessary!

Then there's bees everywhere at the pool. The plantings around the edge of the pool, and separating the sitting areas, are major bee attractors. My daughter got stung while on a floating waterbed in the pool, and we couldn't even eat the food that was ordered because it was swarmed with bees. The resort should have put more thought into the plantings around the pool. Then the service...the kids that are down there working are all really nice, and try hard to please, but the place is just really understaffed. 30 minutes to get a beer, and another 30 to get the bill.

We didn't eat at Andrea, and it might be absolutely fantastic, but one of the most disappointing aspects of this place was the poor quality of the food. The best thing I ate at the resort was the hotdog before golf. We went to Pelican Grill Friday night. The server, Frederick, was fantastic, but it took forever to get our entrees out, so before we all fell asleep at the table, we asked to have the dinners boxed up so we could take them back to the room. The meals were inedible, and the caesar salad with shrimp my wife ordered was drenched in dressing, and the shrimp were missing. I spoke with the manager on duty, David, who handled the situation very well, which was appreciated, but honestly, between the Pelican Grill, and the Coliseum, no way did we want to eat any other meals at the resort.

We went to Red O one night, Mexican food by Rick Bayless, and that was fantastic. Also went to Javier's which was very good but not quite as good as Red O.

We played golf one afternoon, at the Ocean South Course. The golf course was a very fun and memorable experience. Three of the holes went right down to the beach. I thought the course was up there with Punta Mita, Cabo Del Sol, etc. I highly recommend the golf course and would definitely play again, even with the high greens fees. Note that the golf course came before the resort by about 15 years.

Our biggest disappointments were the quality of the food, the pool issues, and the quality of the service. The rank and file employees were mostly great, but there is just something wrong with how the place is managed. More focus seems placed on staging cars out front, test driving Ferraris, and whatever celebrity wedding is taking place that weekend.

The positives were the location, the grounds, the rooms were very good, the golf, and the beach/beach service.

Would we go back again? Probably not. For as much money we can go to the Palmilla and get so much more. And you know what? I still haven't received my statement. Now I've got to babysit that too. How much better this property would be if it was run by the Four Seasons.

This property is one of the most beautiful resorts we have ever visited. My family and I have traveled to many beautiful destinations, and always enjoy visiting new places, but this resort at Pelican Hill is one that we look forward to visiting again. My wife and I were traveling with family and friends and an 18-month baby so we had lots of logistical demands. We started our stay in 2 bungalows and a 2-bedroom villa. All of the accommodations were beautiful and very spacious. The views and landscaping of the property were absolutely stunning. The staff and butler service did all they could to make our stay as easy as possible. During our stay, we decided to move into a 4-bedroom villa and the staff made the transition as seamless as possible. Traveling with a baby has its challenges, but the staff went out of their way to make sure everything we needed for the baby was ready in the new suite. They were even able to baby-proof the villa for us. A special thank you to the staff who made it happen, Quien and Paulyne at the front desk, Ismael for the outstanding butler service, and Nikolay, the GM who coordinated it all.

This is my first stay at the Pelican Hill Hotel and it was a comfortable one.

The location of the hotel on top of the hill allowed residents to have a nice view of the ocean and the surrounding property which was a very nice in the morning. So if you enjoy daily morning walks or jogs then you're in the right location.

We had a 3 bdrm villa with a private large balcony overlooking the golf course and the ocean, all amenities were provided especially in the kitchen. All cooking utensils, if you plan to cook for yourself,a washing machine with a dryer and a private garage.

House keeping - took care of everything especially if you were too lazy to wash the dishes.

Butler service - we met with our butler on arrival but haven't heard from him during the whole stay which is not usual from a butler, the ones i dealt with in other hotels called us on a daily basis to check on us with recommendations for activities. Also every time I call the butler I'm transferred to the front desk and never was connected to a butler. I don't why, hope the butler service improves.

The breakfast Buffet - was ok and had the usual scrambled eggs, sausages and a la carte but one thing i didn't like was it took a while to be served and can't blame the waiters as some were new.

My conclusion - Nice first time hotel but i doubt that i would visit it again ,main reason is the cost of stay is high for a week, but other than that seemed a good stay.

P.S: the carpets in the villa needs attention as I don't think they've been ever washed, they seemed extremely dirty with a lot of stains. Wish you all the best

Room Tip: Make sure if you are assigned a butler to make good use of him. Cook you're own breakfast in t...

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your recent stay at Pelican Hill. The less-than-Five-Star service from your butler is unacceptable, and I assure you that I have personally discussed your feedback with our Villa managers. Based upon your comment, I have also addressed your concerns regarding the carpets with the housekeeping manager. As we continuously strive to improve the Pelican Hill guest experience, I sincerely thank you for your thoughtful feedback. Should you wish to discuss your experience further, I invite you to contact our Director of Rooms directly at your convenience. I will provide his contact information separately in a private message.
