January 2017 - The purpose of our trip to Marriott Newport Coast was to gather with out of town friends and relatives for a week long stay. This was a staycation for my family and I. It's our favorite local hotel to gather with out of town guests for it's location near Crystal Cove, Corona Del Mar, Balboa Island, Marriott schedule of events and amenities. We had two (2) - two bedroom villas. Our group included four children; age six and under. Marriott understands family vacations and we all had a great time; it's all about the kids and spending together. We utilized the Marriott shuttle bus to the beach, koi fish feeding, s'mores by the fire, 3D Ship Craft, Pirate Party and Treasure Hunt, wine and cheese event - the musician was great that evening; kids danced too. We enjoyed mostly in villa dining and BBQ area. We gathered for one dinner at the Cottage room (first come, first serve) to accommodate nine adults and four children. Staff members we encountered were pleasant and special requests were graciously granted. Thank you Marriott - special family memories made.

I had requested a decent view room due to it being my 3rd year anniversary and I had spent a lot of time planning this trip. I was put in a first floor room, that not to mention took us 20 mins to find, where when you walk out to the balcony, and all you see is construction cars and hear work noise (they were doing construction on the main pool which caused it to be shut down our entire stay). Which, was literally right outside the balcony. Upon walking into the room, it had a terrible smell of b.o. There was no way I could have lived in that room. I politely asked the front desk associate if we could move rooms because of the smell and they were really weird and unapologetic about it almost as if they thought we were lying. I was satisfied with our next room, still had no view but was at least off the first floor and didn't smell so bad. At check in, we were told by the agent that taco Tuesday was going on that night at the bar area. Also heard the lady checking in next to me being told about this saying there's gonna be free chips/salsa. So we decided to make that our plans for the first night and got dressed up, saved our appetite and ordered a mini shuttle over to that area (since the property is so huge) while ordering the shuttle, the girl on the phone asked if we were heading to taco Tuesday and told us to have fun. Upon arriving to the area, there was no bar set up as well as no taco tues going on. I asked a worker who was watching over the property who said "uhh no that's not going on". Also ran into another couple who was looking for the taco Tuesday as well. So we called back, and another girl on the phone was like "uh no that's not going on tonight" basically making us seem like we were stupid and upon asking for a shuttle back after our disappointment, made it seem like it was a huge hassle for them "uh yeah I guess he'll come back and get you, it will just be a minute" her name started with an "s" she seemed to work the night phone calls.
I will say though, the shuttle/golf cart driver, Chris? I think his name was, was incredibly nice, helpful, and apologetic for what the rest of the staff did. He was very nice and professional about everything.
The next day, while returning to our room after getting some food, the door went out and slammed crazy, squirting and dropping oil everywhere! The entire room smelled like burning rubber and we had to have 2 engineers come to our room to fix it. Turns out someone who works there, took out a screw and caused it to do that. The engineers were very friendly and super helpful. It was just frustrating that our second night was ruined as well by our room smelling like burning rubber while trying to relax.
I will also say, the marketplace staff in the morning were very friendly so that was nice to have after a tough trip. The property was huge and beyond beautiful. I just wish I was able to enjoy the experience that I saved up a lot of time and money for!

The 2-bedroom villas are nice and big which make them great for family travel. We had an updated unit with a partial ocean view. It was nice, but some parts were dated such as the cabinetry and tile in the master bath (which actually looked pretty gross). While the villa is spacious, there definitely is plenty of wasted space and it's not well-designed. For example, there's no front closet for storing shoes and jackets and beach gear, and the bedroom has closets that are quite small. The resort itself is lots of fun in good weather; we had one rainy day and we were somewhat disappointed with the activities and amenities for that day only.

The good: We were blown away by Science with Susie - one of the activity coordinators does a great job demonstrating engaging science experiments in an interactive "show" that is great for kids of all ages and adults. Of all the things we did on our 5-night trip, my 5-year-old talks about this the most. There are fun arts and crafts scheduled throughout the daylight hours; some are free, some charge a nominal fee. The poolside grille has pretty good food -- when it's open. Every day we ran down to the beach where there are great trails for running or walking. The front desk staff is also very accommodating, and the saltwater taffy that is always available at the front desk is a nice touch.

The not-so-good: There's nothing much to walk to especially for food, so plan accordingly. One day we had counted on having dinner and drinks at the poolside grille, but it had rained earlier (it wasn't currently raining) and the grille was completely closed. That seems silly. The food preparation facilities are completely indoors, so why does the kitchen need to be closed because of rain? The same day, there was supposed to be marshmallow roasting at the firepit, but again because it had rained earlier (it was not actively raining) it was cancelled. If the evening activities are cancelled, the Sandbox should stay open later so that there is something to do instead. The fitness classes are also all outdoors, so again if the weather isn't great, you're out of luck on yoga and the like. They should have a rain location -- there seems to be plenty of indoor space in other areas of the resort! We were also disappointed that there is no wading pool for the little ones given that the rest of the resort is so family-friendly.

Overall, this is a good choice for family travel. If we had older kids or were just traveling as a couple, we would look elsewhere.

We have stayed at this property a number of times. (The last review I made was in 2012.)
Many of the units have been updated and refurbished with new furnishings. The grounds and property still look fresh, clean and comfortable. It was still a delight to stay here.

Location:
This Marriott time share resort is located in along the Southern California coastline in Newport off of the Pacific Coast Highway.
It is a few miles drive from shopping areas in Irvine, Costa Mesa, and Newport Beach.

Accommodations:
All units are two bedroom, two bath condos, with full kitchen and outside lanai.
They are spacious with an eating area and seating area.
With fold-out sofas, the unit accommodates eight persons.

The rooms are large, comfortable, and clean.
The master bedroom is roomy enough for a king-size bed with large tub; and bathroom with a shower.
The second bedroom has a queen-size bed and a double-size sleeper sofa. It also adjoins the second bathroom.
The beds were firm, comfortable, and provided a relaxing sleep.
All rooms have large flat screen televisions and large closets.

There is a full kitchen with full-sized refrigerator and dishwasher.
There is dining table with chairs for six persons.
Cooking (pots and pans) and eating utensils are included in the unit.
The “living room” has a large sofa (which folds out to a queen-size bed) as the seating area with a large screen television.

The exterior hallway noise and exterior street noise was minimal. Climate control was adequate.

The property is spread out over a hilly area, so access to the main area with pool and activities could require a bit of a walk up stairs and uphill walkways (especially if you are in one of the remote units).

Amenities:
There is a washer and dryer in all units.
There is a business center with two desktop computers and use of printer in the main building.
There is a large main pool adjacent to the main building. Pool food service is available.
Daily activities are scheduled; side excursions also available.
Also, there are two smaller remote pools.

There is a free shuttle that will transport you within the resort and also to nearby shopping areas.

Parking is included for one primary vehicle which allows you to park in front of the unit. Additional guests must park in a central parking structure which could be a substantial distance from your unit. Also, one negative point is that parking could be challenging if you return later at night. You may find a parking space, but it could be a considerable distance from your unit.

Staff:
The staff was friendly and welcoming. The reception staff was helpful and accommodating.

Note:
The only issue we had on this stay was that debris was left inside the bathroom sink cabinet.
It took three calls to finally have a supervisor come to remove the debris and disinfect the cabinet.

You will most likely be invited to a time-share presentation…lured with cash incentives.
Be prepared for their typical high pressure tactic to sell you additional time share points.
