Marriott's Newport Coast Villas
Ranked #5 of 18 Hotels in Newport Beach

My familiy of 5 had only had one night to spend so we could not take advantage of all this beautiful hotel had to offer. Very large two bedroom apartment, comfortable pull out sofa, luxurious amenities, and the grounds are outstanding. They were doing some construction during the stay, but it was not intrusive. The view of the ocean from the pool area is particularly nice. The only thing to advise other travelers about is that it was further away from downtown Newport Beach than I had thought. Maybe a fifteen minute drive. It actually is closer to Laguna. This is definitely a place I would stay in again.

I hesitantly write this review because this property is one of the best kept secrets around. On most resort websites, the accomodations/amenities usually look better in photograph & on the website than in person. I would say it's just the opposite with this website. We just could not believe how nice this place was. My only regret was that our trip was too short. It helped to have perfect weather and wonderful views of the ocean. I can't wait to go back. This place is wonderful.

We had a great week at NCV and wish we could have stayed another week. We love to travel in the off season to places that are normally busy because we don't like fighting with crowds so we were very happy that NCV was probably half full during our stay. We got an upstairs end unit (1620) that faced the ocean and golf course. We really liked exploring the Orange County area. We were short drives to Mission San Juan Capistrano, Laguna Beach, all the Costa Mesa shopping malls. We also enjoyed spending two half-days at Crystal Cove Beach. You donate $2 to the hotel for the pass and you get it for all day, thereby saving $13 from the gate price. At low-tide the tide pools were awesome. So many anemonies, mussels, hermit crabs and even a sea slug or two. We spent a day driving up to Universal Studios, another day at the very nice Long Beach aquarium (go after 2pm so the school trips are gone, same goes for Mission SJC). We liked the abundance of restaurants nearby but we cooked most food items as Trader Joe's is very close.

Having read other posts on here I wanted to get a newer unit in the 4 or 5,000's but we were given the complete opposite, a room in the 1000's. Concerned, I asked how old the 1,000's were and was told they were about 8 years old but that they were the most recently refurbished, only 6 months ago. So we were pleasantly surprised that the inside of the unit was very nice and very modern.

The two issues that prevented me from giving the NCV 5 stars:

1. This is the second Marriott I've stayed at where we were less than impressed with the sound proofing (25 year old resorts in Palm Springs are better insulated). Walls are very thin and so are the floors. People who talk loud and who like their tv's loud can be heard through the walls, it's very annoying. On the second night we heard the chuckleheads in the unit BELOW us having a drunken fight at 2 in the morning-I'm talking to you, you smoking, drunkards in room 1610 on January 11, 2010. The slamming of drawers, the banging of walls, and the loud voices were very audible. I'm sure this was an isolated incidence, but it is my non-professional opinion that if you have a lower level unit in the middle-at least in the old section- that you will hear lot's of noise. We just got lucky with having an upstairs end unit. Perhaps the newer units have better sound proofing.

2. There are not enough hot tubs to accomodate even a minimal amount of guests. Granted, in the summer not as many people will probably want to use them. But in the winter it would have been nice to have more than two hot tubs to choose from. Mostly, the hot tubs were full.

Besides these two quivels we really enjoyed our stay. The pools were nice and large. We like that there was a "quiet pool" and a "quiet hot tub". We liked just being able to hang out in our comfortable villa. I will say that Marriott did get something really right: the beds were very comfortable, a complete 180 compared to the other "upper end" Marriott we stayed at. I even brought my bed cushion from home but ended up not needing it. So that was a nice surprise. We definately look forward to going back someday.

These free-standing units of about 8 condos are quiet. Ours was recently re-done like new with brand new carpet, granite counters, etc.

For under $200/night, we had a 2 bedroom, 2 batch unit w/ kitchen & living room, plus 2 fold out couches, plus a $25 gift cert. to use on site. Beautiful pool area.

Location was very handy - site was beautifiul. Highly recommended.

Our room was spacious, extremely clean, and had everything we could need. Gorgeous views from balcony and many locations on resort. Activities, pools, and assorted play areas and sport courts conveniently located and supplied with whatever was needed. Sand lot even had buckets and shovels provided.

If you want a self-contained resort that does not require a car this could be your place. This is a large (even by Marriott standards) resort with several pools, shuttle, in/out grocery/snacks, and 1/4 mile walk to the beach. However, restaurants, attractions, shopping, more beach, and ncesssities all require a car. The villas are spacious and the resort is incredibly clean. The walls are very thin so noise is a factor; stay above the first floor. Oddly, the appliances are substandard. Don't expect economy in this high end southern CA area; golf was $$$$. Do go to the Pacific Whey Bakery & Cafe for pastries and Pomodoro for ultra fresh Italian cuisine. This resort is for the outdoor sports minded and families.
