“Very Good Collection, Depressing Venue”
Reviewed 18 October 2012

I visited the OCMA during the OC collects exhibition. It contained a very good collection of contemporary and modern artists, including artists such as William de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Ed Ruscha, and Richard Diebenkorn. The museum is in the downtown part of Newport Beach in a building that feels like a warehouse. The floors are painted an industrial gray with stark white walls, not particularly recently painted. There are no windows or outside light in the display rooms. Unfortunately this influenced my appreciation of the collection. Parking is free, but admission is a somewhat high $12. Orange County deserves a better building for its collection.

“nice surprise”
Reviewed 31 August 2012

This welcoming showcase right near Fashion Island has a surprisingly astute collection, and the proximity of a bunch of restaurants means you can make an afternoon/early evening experience out of the whole deal.

“A hidden gem!”
Reviewed 30 August 2012

This was a great museum which had on display Richard Diebenkorn's "The Ocean Park Series" which was absolutely phenomenal! As a 3rd generation Fine Art Dealer in our now 4th generation gallery business (David David Gallery, Philadelphia), this was one of the highlights of our trip. To have been able to immerse ourselves in this treasure trove was a privilege.

“A Small Museum Notable Mainly for its Special Exhibits”
Reviewed 23 April 2012

The Orange County Museum of Art had been in existence now for 50 years. It is primarily interesting for its varied special exhibits, now until May 27th the Ocean Park Series by Richard Diebenkorn. Displayed in eight spacious galleries in a modern building, the Diebenkorn exhibit is a temporally representative survey of 25 of the 140 numbered Series painted over 20 years plus other contemporary related works. Unfortunately the lighting is not really well done ( somewhat dim )but otherwise the exhibit is professionally mounted with a helpful timeline. Situated right in Fashion Island it is easy to get to and has free parking. No restaurant but a tiny gift shop. Depending on the exhibit it is worth a trip.
