“Fun”

Nice beach. Easy to pay for your parking. Nice area to lay out and read a book. There are fire pits and poles for volleyball nets. (I think you have to bring your own equipment) The water was surprisingly warm here.

“Interesting and many different things to do”
Reviewed 20 July 2014

This pier has everything that a tourist would want-shops, food, amusement rides, boat rides, a ferry across to the island, a Science Center and lots of souvenirs. It was neat to just roam around and see how life on the ocean differs from anywhere else that is land locked. We had a lot of fun before and after our whale watching tour.

“Balboa”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

A bit more quiet here than the Newport Pier. A grassy area for a picnic. If you walk to the bay side, about 2 blocks, you'll find the fun zone and the ferry to Balboa Island. Try the Balboa Bar or frozen banana...yum.

“Charming”
Reviewed 13 June 2014

It's another California specialty, developing charming areas around bigtime attractions. The beaches of south California pack 'em in, and almost every big beach area in the state has some bigtime development going on. The Balboa Pier area is certainly one of those places.

Beachy, lots of room, pretty good parking (not much free) and a wide range of restaurants and activities. If you can muster the high price of admission for staying in the area, there is more to do than a week will allow. Ferries, beach that goes on for miles (really, miles), good shopping and food are just part of it. There are a zillion beach cruisers for rent by the hour or day. There is surfing, boogy board riding, etc. The list is endless.

With a bit of reluctance, I recommend this place and area for a family vacation. Just bring a couple of credit cards, or do what we do and save the money to pay for it all BEFORE you get there (easy for me to say!). We rent a house, move in and don't drive for a week. We spend a lot time walking, at the beach and riding bicycles. You don't have to spend money all day, but you can, as there is no shortage of opportunities to empty your wallet.
