R & D have a nice menu and wine selection. We sat outside and enjoyed our dinner. Try the veggie burger it's really good and the fries are amazing. Usually its packed so try to come ahead of time in order to get a table.

Came here with my family for a pre-Christmas lunch while shopping, and it was a great experience that will have me coming back! The restaurant is located near the Nieman Marcus department store at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. Fashion Island is a self described "Lifestyle Center" that is essentially an outdoor mall with a collection of upscale shops and restaurants. R+D Kitchen is located along the outer edge of the mall, with a parking structure directly across from it.

Inside the restaurant has a mid-century modern feel to it. A lot of wood facade line the walls and ceilings, with black framed pictures with a "jazz" theme to them. There are two areas primarily, a large wrap around bar area and an upper dinning area with booths and bar stools tables. The seats are comfortable and the tables are firm and wide. The atmosphere is "upscale casual," best way to describe it is like a fancier version of Panera. It has a relaxed atmosphere usually populated with upper and upper-middle class patrons and professionals that at times can get a little loud. You don't have to dress up, but at the entrance it specifically says that for men your shirt needs to have sleeves on them (i.e. no tank tops), just keep that in mind.

When eating at place like this you need to be aware that the reason you come is for the QUALITY of the food rather than the quantity. The menu is rather small compared to other places. It's not going to be like Cheesecake Factory with numerous menu options, rather it has a few items that are done really well. You'll have your choice of about four sandwiches and four entrées, with a nice selection of drinks. There are only two desert items, a chocolate creme brûlée and a carrot cake. Be aware that it's a little expensive (18 dollars for my burger and fries), but to me the quality and care of the food was well worth i and I don't feel it's gregarious. True, you can get more food at a smaller price somewhere else, but it's Newport Beach in a nice restaurant that has a dress code, you should expect it.

The service was very professional and prompt. You can tell the staff was very well trained. There's usually a line to get in, but it's well worth it! All in all, unless you have the money it's not a place to come regularly, but as a treat to a nice place a great dining experience, it's defiantly a strong recommendation!

The sensuous Reubenesque comprised of corned beef, cole slaw, baby swiss, mustard and toasted corn rye will undulate to rhythms unknown and sear your mind with unquestionable desire and libertine delight.

What pairs better with a sandwich than the Hand-cut French Fries? Shoestring in quality, ketchup and sriracha mayonnaise are its accompaniment. Dependency is imminent.

Dip Duo consists of guacamole and pimento cheese dip which is served with an unlimited supply of freshly-fried tortillas. Warm, brittle and delicate the tortillas are instrumental to the symmetry and phenomenon that are the dips.

The beef for the Cheeseburger is ground each morning for service, served with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheddar and a homemade bun. Fleshy and wholesome the burger satisfies primal indiscretions.

Far from prosaic, the Carrot Cake with mascarpone cheese studded with walnuts will leave you ambling melodiously towards a primitive state of being - untouched.
