“Friendly, well-kept, in a prime location”
Reviewed 21 May 2012 via mobile

My wife, our 23-year-old son, and I travelled to Newport Beach from Texas to visit our 19-year-old son who was staying in the area for a couple months. If you are looking for the Taj Mahal, go to India. But if you are looking for a friendly, well-kept place just across the street from the beach, with comfortable, clean beds, an excellent shower, and the absolutely nicest breakfast hostess in California, then this property will fit the bill. We stayed in Room 412 and I confess to being uncertain when I noticed it was right next to the elevator. I need not have worried. Noise was never a problem. Parking for hotel guests on-site or in the very nearby off-site lot was included in the price of our room. (I did NOT get charged $10/day for parking; maybe that's only during peak season ... or maybe they've changed the policy). Our room was a double queen. It was a tight fit. But we didn't go all the way to California to sit in our hotel room. We were out nearly all day, every day. When we returned in the evening, our beds were made, towels exchanged, and we felt quite at home from the first night. We stayed six nights and would not have blinked an eye to stay longer. The staff were uniformly friendly and helpful. The breakfast hostess is one of the highlights of this property: She delighted in fixing every guest's waffles, dispensing helpful travel tips, encouragement, and even pats on the back as she puttered around the breakfast room each morning. Look: If you are used to staying in Hiltons or Intercontinentals or other high-end properties, you won't appreciate this Best Western. But if you have reason to experience Orange County, California, and want to keep within a reasonable budget, book your room now. You won't regret it.

Darkish, run down, needs updating. It looks very tired. They charge $10/night for parking when there is adjacent, free on street parking as well. Across Pacific Coast Highway + a block from the beach. Checked in in the afternoon and bath towels were not done in the washer till a few hours later. Security doors to the outside often easy to get through without card. Just a worn out place. OK but not great at all.

I didn't get her name, but the little gal who helped in the breakfast area was AWESOME! The spread was decent as well - good variety.

Check-in was quick and friendly even though it was 10 PM. Parking is a bit confusing and limited, but the signal at the corner makes it easy to turn left onto PCH during rush hour!

The room was nice, clean and newer looking, although the hotel itself is a little antique and the elevator is dingy and noisy. Bathroom fan was noisy.

Some reviews said it was loud so we should ask for a pool facing room. We weren't on the pool side but we didn't have noise issues (it was Thursday PM, so not a big party night)

Room Tip: A bit tricky to get to the beach with little ones and all of your gear. Plan ahead!

Business trip to Newport and Laguna for a week. I selected the Best Western Newport Beach based on price and location. Right price although the weekend rate (Friday) was higher than what I paid through the week. It's right off of the 55 so it's easy to get to Orange County or other destinations. I won't say "quickly" as the traffic during the day is brutal. Check-in was fast and easy....once the clerk turned down the music from the website they were surfing. I asked for a quiet room and received a room on the 3rd floor near the back of the hotel. The windows faced the side road next to the hotel. While noise from PCH was minimal the morning traffic outside the window, which started 5am, was noisy. Ask for a quiet room. The hotel is 2 blocks from the beach. The room has a ac unit in the wall which is loud and difficult to set on a chilly night. It's just a personal nit with these wall units. I wish they had digital thermostats where I could set the temp and get to sleep. The bed was comfy and the room keep clean during my stay. The breakfast is good and the breakfast lady is the highlight of the hotel. She was the sunshine of my morning. She helped so many tourist feel comfortable and helped them with their plans for the day many coming back the next day to thank her for such great advice. If only her personality couldn't rub off on the front desk people....hmmm. For some reason when I asked the front desk clerk for a place to eat or grab a drink they steered me way up the street when there was a nice little Italian place next door. It's not stellar but it was good! I'll upload photos of the interesting furniture in my room. The cabinet was too long for the wall outside the bathroom which gave me a couple of bruises while navigating back to the bed in the dark. All in all it's a nice clean place for a price that's right.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room, higher floor, facing the parking lot.

We cannot thank you enough for all of your comments here on TripAdvisor! They are so candid and will help us improve our hotel. Brenda in the Breakfast Room is definitely a keeper, and the furniture situation in that room is definitely worth reviewing. We hope you elect to stay with us again on your next visit to Newport Beach and once again, we appreciate this review!

We ended up here late one night, front desk gave us the managers rate and then extended it to the following night as well - the gal in the continental breakfast was very attentive and made the stay very pleasant! Rooms were clean - my son and I shared a king suite. The beach was a quick walk - great location!
Definitely would stay here again!

Room Tip: There was some road noise, so pack earplugs or ask for a room on the parking lot side.

Two queen beds was a bit tight for a family of 5. Paid $145 a night, which was a bit high for me. Rooms were clean, beds were good, bathroom was good sized. Didn't try the pool. Beach is across the street withing walking distance. One negative, we had three GPSs in the car, and none of them could find the hotel. Talking with the desk, seems to be a common problem. Room was on the street side, but traffic noise wasn't that bad. Breakfast was simple, but good.

This boutique style Best Western was very good for the money. I believe we paid $100/night for two queen size beds and a view of the ocean. It is very clean and has a small pool that is convenient to have a swim coming home from the beach.

The price also includes your breakfast which has waffles, toast, english muffins, bagels, hard boiled eggs, yogourt, fruit, coffee, juice, milk etc. This is a really good value as to go out and have breakfast for 4 at a local restaurant would be roughly $40/day. They have a breakfast concierge named Brenda who is fantastic as she makes the waffles and will give you excellent advice on where to spend your day in your travels. We visited almost all of the places and restaurants she recommended and they were all fantastic!

The hotel is right along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) so you do get a bit of traffic noise but that is to be expected. There is direct access to Huntington Beach across the PCH and the town of Newport Beach and Huntington Beach are a 5 minute drive.

This is not a resort hotel, rather it should be used as a resting and breakfast spot for day trips. We had a great time and saved tons of money by staying there.

Room Tip: If you want to avoid a little bit of traffic noise overnight you'll have to have a parking lot v...
