This is the second time my wife and I have stayed at the Chateau Du Sureau in California. It is close to Yosemite Park. This luxurious bed and breakfast has a fantastic restaurant on the property (The Elderberry House) and a fantastic Spa. The food at the restaurant and the great wine list rival the finest establishments in the US or Europe. The attention to detail and guest service is something we have never experienced to this depth. Each room is in a different European themed decor. Authentic Antique furniture is in every room. The efforts of Sonja and Erna a re visible throughout. The breakfast consits of a good balance of cheeses, fruits and meats. Our visit here has truly been a wonderful experience. The place is a destination in and of itself. The chic little towns in the rest of the "gold country" and Yosemite Valley are also not to be missed.

We had heard about this Relais & Chateaux property for a number of years and have stayed at other affiliated small hotels in the Caribbean (Horned Dorset) and France (Les Crayeres). So it was with great anticipation that we checked in for a romantic weekend in February 2010. We were warmly greeted and shown to our room by the Chateau manager. The room was very cozy, with a roaring fire in the hearth, and exposed beam ceiling. The bed was quite comfortable, being outfitted with a fluffy down comforter and fine italian linens. The room was clean, though the lighing fixtures and controls could stand to be updated.
One problem we noticed was that the bathtub was clogged, so after showering, one had to stand in the dirty water and wait for the tub to drain, before completing the bath. For such an exquisite hotel experience, this oversight stood out. Overall, we would recommend Chateau du Sureau to our friends. There was good attention to our comfort and ease, and the wait staff was excellent. We had a delightful stay at this hotel, though it was not up to the standard set by our previous two stays at the other Relais & Chateaux properties.

We stayed at the Chateau for two nights as part of an 11 night road trip around Califoria. This was our first stop. The first thing we notice was that this place had the most amazing service. To enter the property, you pull up to beautiful iron gate and ring up to house. As soon as the gate opened, we could see two people in Victorian servant garb rushing down the stairs of the house to meet us. One showed us around the property (which includes a beautiful garden area with swings, a gazebo, a pond, a giant chess board and a bocce court) while the other drove out car around the house and unloaded our luggage into our room (we stayed in the Mint Room) before we got there. We were brought roast beef crostini with glasses of good red wine about 15 minutes after we arrived. We spent the first afternoon in the garden on the swings and in our room relaxing. The room itself was very beautiful, with a canopy bed, antique furniture and a huge jacuzzi tub.

For dinner the first night we went to the restaurant at the Chateau, the Elderberry House. The restaurant itself is beautiful, and the service was flawless. When we were seated, the first thing we noticed was that the menu had our names printed it, a nice souvenir. The 5 course dinner and wine pairing was outstanding. Everything we had was superb, especially the salmon "lasagna" (although the bland-seeming eggplant soup was just ok). Before dessert, we were offered the opportunity to move to the patio to enjoy the remaining course. It was a lovely night and a great end to a wonderful day.

The breakfasts were probably the only slight negative to this inn (other than the fact that they did not provide wood for the fireplace even though it got down into the low 60s at night). The breakfast was very similar both days we were there and was very european, meaning cold meats, cheese and fruits. It was fine, but definitely the least satisfying of the trip.

We had a great day in Yosemite on our second day and then had dinner at a local favorite (according to the guest information guide in our room), a casual mexican joint called El Cid. The next day they packed up our car for us and sent us on our way with a bag filled with bottled waters and pistachios.

We enjoyed our stay here and we will be back!

We really enjoyed our 3 day stay at Chateau du Sureau. The staff were professional, friendly, unpretentious and discrete. There is no check-in desk and we really felt at home in the Chateau rather than in a hotel. Beautiful flowers throughout. The room was beautifully appointed. European breakfast was excellent quality and served in a quiet room - some day to day variation in the breakfast meat platter ould have been appreciated - but overall great. When we arrived back at the room one night we found that the staff had placed Chateau du Sureau bookmarks in our books at the correct pages - very sweet.

The Chateau du Sureau is really quite different from the other hotels on our trip. In visiting California, we hadn't expected to find ourselves cosseted in the comfort of Austria of a bygone era. But, service is exceptionally warm and friendly and the charms of this small hotel soon won us over. The rooms are very comfortable, each uniquely furnished with period antiques and overlook a small but very well kept garden. Associated with the hotel is a very fine restaurant serving food and wine in the Austrian tradition. The hotel is very well located for Yosemite and I would highly recommended it - especially for anyone wishing to add a European flavour to their trip.

This was an anniversary celebratory 3-day weekend hosted by our children - 6 of us in all. The rooms are all different but equally well appointed with comfortable beds and fine linens, and the adjoining baths are large and provide separate shower and tub. The overall impression is of a luxurious Bavarian, small, intimate hotel. The service is impeccable and attentive without being overbearing. What impressed us was the attention to detail wherever you looked... bags of bottled water and snacks as you leave for a hike in Yosemite, CDs and player in the room, afternoon iced tea and sandwiches upon arrival, luxurious robes for the bath, bowls of fresh fruit and plates of delectable confections always accessible and a lovely main sitting room downstairs for watching an afternoon ball game while sipping champagne. Unbelievable.

For those who want to be pampered there is a spa on site. We took a refreshing dip in the pool after hiking and in the morning walked down to the bocce ball court and life-sized outdoor chess board. Everywhere one looks the flowers, creative sculptures and lush views surround you in beauty.

We ate our dinners in Erna's Elderberry Restaurant located right next to the hotel. The food was perfection, and, as with the hotel, the atmosphere was Old World elegance. Again, the service was first class. With a menu printed specially for our group at each dinner, we felt cared for beyond measure.

Tip: The rooms away from the highway are quietest.

We will recommend this extraordinary place without hesitation to our friends, and we will certainly be back!
