“Good base for Yosemite”
Reviewed 16 September 2007

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights while visiting Yosemite. Althought the rooms are quite dark and a bit dated, they were clean, large and had everything you needed. The bed was not the comfiest and the pillows very poor. However we had a nice terrace with good views and the outdoor pool was pleasant after a hard days sightseeing and driving. We didn't use the indoor pool. The grounds of the hotel are very pleasant and it appeared to be one of the better places in town.

Oakhurst itself doesn't have much going for it but is a half hour drive from the south entrance to Yosemite (about an hour to the valley floor).

We can thoroughly recommend the restaurant at the turnoff to Bass Lake.

For a couple of nights I would recommend this place.

After reading the reviews, we selected the Best Western, as our choice of hotels in Oakhurst was limited. This place is so outdated, drab and dreary. The decor is ugly! They need to find a good interior designer.
The check-in was speedy and pleasant. The lobby is huge, but I don't know why, as they offer no breakfast for guests. In other words, there is no need for it.
The room is large and has a refrigerator and microwave.
The bathroom is adequate with a nice long counter. The faucet at the sink is very difficult to turn off and we frequently find that the water is running when we think it is off. The colors are unbelieveable. The tub and tile do not go together at all.
There is one wastebasket in the entire unit, which is in the bath, and they do not even put a plastic liner in it. The towels are thin and rough.
The beds are very comfortable, but that is about all that is good in the room. The pillows are awful, but I brought our own down travel pillows, so they were not a problem.
When I found that I needed a cable to connect my laptop to their internet service, the front desk gladly loaned me what I needed. I have had no problem using my computer.
If I were returning to this area, I think I would try the Comfort Inn across the street.

The most expensive hotel we stayed in during our road trip of California and probably the most disappointing. The staff at check-in were very polite and helpful. The only availability was the 3 bedroom "house". It was nearly $300 per night but we were desperate as we'd been travelling all day. The house was like stepping back into the 1970's with nylon shagpile carpeting! The bathrooms were fantastic but the rest of the house was dark and gloomy and in desperate need of remodelling. There was no complimentary breakfast offered and the restaurant was exaclty inviting. It was like sleeping at grandparents house, with floral wallpaper and frilly curtains included!

we left the excellent best western creekside in bishop to drive
through the tioga pass and onto yosemite.the drive through tioga
and yosemite was absolutley stunning.you have to see it to believe it,superb scenery of mountains, lakes, trees and wildlife.
our destination was the best western gateway oakhurst.the drive from the park west entrance to oakhurst took a bit longer than i
thought it would.however we arrived about 6 in the evening.the hotel is nicely placed with a good carpark.check in was easy.rooms were spacious and smart but mine was on the dark side as we had bushes just outside window but that was a minor
issue.overall a good hotel.so far on our trip the best western chain was impressive.just one little grumble.the restaurant next to hotel was expensive and overpriced.oakhurst is only a small
stop over town but try and find something to eat elsewhere.next
morning we set off for the argonaut hotel san francisco.

  • Liked — it was relaxing and quiet after drive through yosmite
  • Disliked — overpriced restaurant next door

The best western does look lovely and was clean and tidy.

Our biggest problems were that they didnt accept our card [Maestro) so we had to go and get cash before we could check in (not what you want after a 4 hour drive).

Then once in the room, the beds werent a great size. Plus not enough pillows.

The worst thing though was the noise. If you are on the bottom row, you can hear EVERYTHING that is going on above you and it got really bad sometimes, just from people walking about.

The pool was a let-down too. Very small and full of leaves.

The place is okay if youre on a budget but I would try and find somewhere nicer if I was going back. (Which I wont be doing...)

If you do go though, try the restaurant. Lovely staff and lovely food.

This hotel is located just 14 miles from the south entrance to Yosemite National Park. Stayed here with my family, which includes a 9 and 7 year old. The hotel room was large and clean. It included a counter area with sink, microwave and a fridge. The hotel has a nice outdoor pool area with a hot tub.
Many surrounding restaurants, retail stores and a supermarket. Would stay here again.

Our family stayed at the BW Yosemite Gateway for one night on the way to Yosemite Park. It is a very typical roadside motel, nothing fancy, but clean and good service. Cute lobby, looks like a lodge. The place is on a hill and has no elevators, so if you have problems with heavy luggage, ask for a downstairs unit. The room was clean and comfy. The housekeeping staff was very pleasant, asking if they could do anything to assist in our stay.
We avoided the restaurant next door, relying on other reviews. We had an absolute wonderful dinner at Todd's Barbeque just up the street. Great barbeque (and we know barbeque, trust me!!) and perfect prices. Some of the best food we had on our trip!! Had breakfast at Karen's Cafe, which was a good start to our day.
Oakhurst is a great town, very clean and friendly people. There are enough services to get ready for Yosemite.
I'd certainly stay here again and advise others to give it a try.
