“A Gem in Rodrigues”
Reviewed 22 November 2015 for a stay in November 2015

We had a wonderful holiday in Rodrigues staying at Lescale which made it. The island is very unspoilt and beautiful
The house was spotlessly cleaned by Marie and she cooked us local meals at a small fee. what a pleasure.

The house has everything that you need.

We'll definitely be back!

“Very disappointing.”

Please read all of this review!
My husband and I stayed in Lescale for three long weeks in March. The first thing you need to know about Lescale is there are about 36 steps up to the villa from the garage. Although a struggle, especially with suit cases and shopping, it does give a fantastic view when you get up there, in fact the view is the only good thing about this villa. I would say Lescale is not really safe for young children due to those steps and the pool being unfenced.

The second thing you need to know is that Lescale is an old house and, from our point of view, needs a lot of care and attention. When I read the reviews about this villa I do wonder if the reviewers were actually staying in the same place as we were! The villa is situated in a semi-residential area and although there are not many other houses around it there is some music from the down the hill and some loud music from villa just below but luckily it does not last too long. You will expect to find geckos ( harmless but watch where you are treading!), bugs and lots of ants in this villa. It is surrounded by greenery so we did expect to see some creatures there but not ants in the bedrooms, clothes cupboard, cups and coffee maker and much more. It did rain for the first week we were there and were told they are due to the rain but considering they were also there when it did not rain don't take that as an excuse. In fact funnily enough they only disappeared when we complained about them.

The most irritating thing about our stay was the WiFi/internet connection. We had stated that good WiFi is a must for us both for business and family reasons while we are away from home. The internet was very slow to the point of being almost useless all the time except when it did not work at all. We were assured that it was ok but we had to go out every other day and spend the most of that day catching up with things at a hotel or restaurant where the WiFi worked fine so it has nothing to do with slowness of the islands nettery system!

There is no air conditioning, and no fan in the living area and no mosquito netting on any windows. So you are stuck in the evenings with being stuffy with windows closed or bitten to death with them open. Not good options! You may want to take the bedside lamps from the bedrooms if you want to read in the sitting room at night as it is quite dark. The grass was not cut the whole three weeks we were there.

The pool is very small. Unfortunately a third of it is taken up with a ledge/shallow part where you can only sit. If you treat it as a dipping pool you will be fine. There is a lovely large terrace to sit and look out over the town and lagoon.

The maid comes in every day from 9.30am until 3pm and does her best. She is a lovely lady who is a good cook if you want a meal made for a small charge. During our holiday we wanted peace and quiet rather than someone in the villa every day cleaning. When you are on holiday you don't want to have to go out every day while the maid cleans. The only other alternative would be to let her clean around you, or sit on the terrace all day. No thank you! Because of this we opted for a clean every other day and I cleaned the days the maid did not come in mainly to get rid of ants but also because I am very particular and would rather clean myself than have people in the villa but I have to admit in this villa I almost gave up. I will not except the excuse that the house was not in a good condition because we had the maid every other day. That is nonsence. It was not really the cleaning that was the main problem it was the oldness of the house espcially the bathroom and kitchen. Don't even look inside the washing machine! In our opinion, the villa needs a jolly good scrub!

If you stay in this villa for only a week bearing in mind the above you will probably enjoy your holiday. We stayed for three weeks and could not wait to move on. Sorry if I sound rather grumpy but the beds were so hard I did not sleep at all well the whole time we were there!

this elderly couple (without children), which we had contact with, a long time before they arrived in Rodrigues, complained about all accomodations they where in in different countries , including Mauritius...;
We will not go into details by replying to this review - dear guests, just read the other reviews on the internet... we have guests coming back every year...

One thing: The house - and it is said on our site, is not made for small children, the pool and terrace are not secured and can be a danger; still, we have many couples who come with children and are very happy.

as for the steps: the house was build in 2002 by my father at the age of 74 years -

“Fantastic Experience”

L'escale is a simple, charming holiday cottage a kilometre or two above Port Mathurin. Sitting on the balcony watching the sun go down each evening over the sea was a perfect way to relax.

We have done luxury boutique hotels before and we really enjoyed the freedom of having our own cottage whilst still having someone to come in for some hours each day to clean, launder and cook for us (and the cooking was delicious, simple and very 'local').

And the help and advice we received both before and during our holiday with organising things (such as hire cars and diving) was also excellent.
