We often walk around Lake Merritt. It's a level, paved, three mile path. It takes about an hour, and is a lovely way to get exercise. It's even nicer now that the whole park is newly and beautifully landscaped. There's a string of lovely lights around the lake which come on at dusk. It is safe to walk at that time; there are a lot of people around.
The lake features what is perhaps the first bird refuge in the U.S. There are also lovely gardens including a bonsai garden, Children's Fairyland, boat rentals and gondola rides. (The gondolas are made in Venice. It's a lot cheaper to have a gondola ride here, believe me.)
It's fun to walk here on the weekends and see what all the people are doing: biking, skating, walking dogs, walking babies, playing music, dancing salsa, tightrope-walking, taking wedding photos...see for yourself.
