Excellent location if taking Bart into the city and visiting east bay (Berkeley/Lake Merritt/Emeryville). Really liked how the "local's" Chinatown is around the corner. Decent room prices and still close enough to San Francisco.More

Thanks for your review. I hope you gave yourself a chance to explore Oakland Chinatown – there are some really great restaurants and shops in the area! We hope you’ll stay with us again next time you’re visiting the East Bay.
Downtown Oakland hotels are really expensive. I usually stay at the "big" Marriott across the street, but for the rates, I decided to try this out and enjoyed it.
If you've stayed at a Courtyard, you know what to expect in the room. Was comfy, with free wifi. Location-wise, the hotel is a block and a half from the BART and there are a few good eateries within walking distance, so that's also a plus.
Service was very friendly. Better than other Courtyards I've been to. Will definitely be back.
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. I’m glad you had a good stay and enjoyed our free WiFi. We look forward to seeing you next time you’re in Oakland.
This excellent hotel is a very good choice if you want to be close to San Francisco and pay a decent price for your room. The BART metro system is only a 10 minute walk from the hotel and that brings you to down town San Francisco in just 16 minutes for around $ 3,25 (October 2013)
Staff was very helpful and professional.
The room was a delight. Large, clean, bright with a nice big bed. There was a big desk with a flat screen TV, large drawers and a refrigerator. A smaller table was under this desk and had wheels for easy moving. In this was you create an excellent working space.
The bathroom with a tub was very clean.
Free WiFi internet worked very well with a good download speed, sufficient to watch streaming media.
When you ask for a room at the back, overlooking the parking lot, you avoid the traffic noise from the busy street in front and on the side of the hotel.
When breakfast is included you can make your selection from the large menu in the breakfast area which is also open to non-guests. The quality of the breakfast was poor and staff could not cope with the flow of guests in the morning. One morning I had to wait 45 minutes for my order and then got the wrong breakfast twice. To avoid any further waiting I took the second breakfast but that was cold and I left most of it. Yoghurt was not good either, you must check expiry date. Some guests, after a long wait, decided to skip breakfast to catch a flight. This is a no go for a good hotel!
Marriott should take some time and review staff and procedures around breakfast or just get a breakfast buffet like I in most hotels. (Or have guests have breakfast in the big Marriott on the other side of the street)
Had a hamburger with fries in the evening but that was not good either. Not well cooked fries and a mediocre hamburger with too much cold lettuce. Better try somewhere else.
The area close to the hotel, the steets on the “big Marriott side” of Broadway is delightful and is packed with nice historic buildings. There are lots of café’s and restaurants in this area that seems to draw a young crowd. There is a nice liberated atmosphere, seems that the SF 60's revived in Oakland. To the other side is sort of China town with cheap Chinese food and not so clean. Further south is the Jack London Square with lots of restaurants.
There is a guest laundry with coin operated machines (2x $ 1,25) You get the detergent for free at the front desk. There is also a laundry service.
The BART station Broadway/12th street is ideal as all trains stop there. North to Richmond/Pittsburg, South to Fremont and across the Bay to the airport and Milbrae. The BART to the airport gives you a direct connection for $ 8,50 single ride (October 2013)
Thanks for taking the time to review your stay with us. We’re glad you made it over to San Francisco – it is a pretty quick trip from our hotel! I’m sorry you had issues with the food service. That is definitely not a typical experience at The Bistro. Please give us another try at next time you’re in Oakland and we will make sure you won’t be disappointed!
I was disappointed with my stay at the Courtyard by Marriott Oakland. The room was ok but strangely positioned so it was hard to watch TV in bed - a small point but it all adds to the stay.
We used the hotel as a base to explore San Francisco. Unfortunately the BART was on strike the weekend we were there and as tourists who were new to the area we didn't know how to get from Oakland to SF by any other method of public transport. When we asked the hotel front desk staff about the BART strike they just informed us that it was on strike - it would have been nice for them to offer us alternatives. In the end we heard about the ferry to SF from a waitress at a local bar!
We appreciate you taking the time to review your stay. Unfortunately, with the BART on strike it affected many guest’s travel plans. Our Front Desk staff can provide many alternative transportation options to San Francisco and we apologize that you weren’t provided with these. Thanks for letting us know, it is something we will be sure to bring up in our next team member meeting. If you find yourself in the Bay area again, we hope you’ll stay with us!
I really enjoyed my stay here. Classic Courtyard, and very well maintained property right in the middle of Oakland. It is Oakland and you are going to have some encounters with those characters who llive on the steets, but it is just part of being in Oakland. The CM is a bit of an oasis. Everything you need on site. Little coffee bar, lobby area, mini store ( 24 hrs) . My room had a mini fridge. My room was neat, clean , modern, with a little sitting area and a big window. The temparature control worked exactly as it should have. It was quiet. They did all the little things- the bottle of water in your fridge , the USA Today delivery. All my wake up calls were on time, they answered all my questions. The valet was on time. They went the extra mile. Every single staff person I encountered was helpful, friendly with suggestions. If they werent sure about something they called and asked for you. The location was convenient to everything: you can walk to an ": old town" area with bars and restaurants and Jack London Square, BART train is just 3 ( short) blocks away and a free shuttle that takes you all over town picked up and dropped off right in front of the front door. Quick trip over the bay bridge if you are driving.
Thank you for your review. We appreciate guests taking the time to tell us about their experience and leaving great tips for future guests. The Free Shuttle outside our hotel is something that most guests don’t know about before arriving – thanks for mentioning that! We hope to see you again next time you’re in Oakland.
This is one of several visits to this particular hotel and the front desk staff , Bruce & Yeju greet me like a family member ! That's amazing and a welcoming that makes me feel at home. The property is located directly above Oakland's China town and some of the coolest shops and eateries being the 4th largest Chinatown In the US. The rooms Are amazingly clean and comfortable bedding. This is tops in the area and you can rest assure I will tell everyone on this Planet how awesome this property is to stay !
Keep up the Awesome Professional standards that You both present and Thank You for always making me feel welcome here at this Courtyard by Marriott downtown Oakland !
Ric, thank you so much for the kind words! We will be sure to let Bruce and Yeju know that they’re doing a great job. We hope to see you again soon!
