Montreal bagels are special: very skinny, with a slightly sweet and dense dough, crusty from wood-fired ovens, and with a shelf life of--- well, very little shelf life at all. I suppose this lack of longevity has kept Montreal bagels from being packaged and exported (although I've heard there is actually a restaurant in Brooklyn that flies bagels down from Montreal daily!)
Anyway, Beauty's Bagel Shop has brought Montreal style bagels to Oakland. They've got the wood oven and distinct sliding board that the bagels come tumbling down when they're lifted from the oven. They are open for breakfast and lunch only, and bagels are baked regularly during that time frame.
My first visit was right after they had opened, and they didn't quite have the baking under control: my bagel was almost burned, way beyond crusty. My second visit was much happier. The bagel was well baked, and I had the smoked trout sandwich, which was excellent, but be forewarned, it is salty. One last thing about the bagels: they are not quite skinny enough to be true Montreal bagels, and the dough isn't quite right, but hey, IT IS VERY CLOSE!
Beauty's is pleasant and homey with a very diverse clientele. Lots of interesting menu choices and very good coffee.
