I spent years going to Tilden most everytime I visited the bay area. But, in recent years, Redwood park, just down Grizzly Peak, has won my heart.
Tons of hiking trails thru beautiful terrain. Varies from chaparral through oak and bay forest to acres of second growth redwood and creek. The whole forest was clearcut in the mid/late 1800s. But, it's been left alone since. And the trees have grown back and big! Sure, it's not like Muir Woods, but it's not like Muir Woods. You just show up, let your dog off the leash, and walk.
And while there are always lots of folks there and you may have to park on the street rather than in one of the lots, we always feel like we're on our own once we get away from the entrances. Sure, you do see people, but the hiking is usually without anyone else in sight.
Best of all: dogs run free! (except on the creek trail at the bottom of the canyon.) Our doggie is always tired and happy after a day here.
bathrooms are portapotties at some of the entrances. There's water available there too. And that's about it for amenities. Just go hike.
