“Perfect Oceanside Vernacular Beach Cottage---Heaven on the Sand”
Reviewed 29 September 2017 for a stay in August 2017

This the perfect beach cottage when you want to get away from it all, have your coffee on the porch and be lulled to sleep at night by the waves. This slice of paradise sits on the quieter sandy end of the strand and is one of the VERY FEW remaining true beach cottages left in Oceanside--sadly most are gone forever and replaced by large soulless condos and shot-gun style mini-mansions.
This one's gorgeous and has been lovingly restored and decorated and would not be out of place in a Coastal Living spread. It is charming and quirky and everything a beach retreat should be and nothing it should not be. It has all the amenities to have a relaxing stay--a fully equipped kitchen with a full stove and refrigerator, microwave, and a washer/dryer. It is fully appointed with a coffee maker, toaster, crock pot, blender and all the tools and equipment your could ask for for cooking and grilling. There are plenty of dishes and serving pieces.
There is a grill in the whimsical backyard complete with artistic stepping stones and a barrel pond with water lilies. The backyard also has patio furniture with a large dining table and chairs as well as a comfy wicker couch and extra chairs--ideal for family gatherings and a garage filled with sand chairs, boogie boards and sand equipment,
The indoor decor is perfect with a palette of soothing greys, whites, and aquas, The living room has a large state of the art TV and sound system and is perfectly decorated with lots of interesting nautical and beach finds. There is a more formal dining area adjacent that can be moved and a queen sized Murphy bed that is just delightful for listening to the waves in (there is also a nice sized dining table in the converted mud-room). The bathroom is good sized for the era and has a very large gorgeously tiled shower and a hair dryer. The bedroom has a TV, a full bed and twin bunks that my kids love and fight over. They have the coolest individual nautical lights which is a plus and there is a large walk-in closet---big enough for a porta-crib AND all your luggage! There is also a TV, fan and windows that open to let in the breeze. The living room also has two large closets with space for clothing, plus have extra fans, pillows, blankets, a vacuum, binoculars, DVDs, and board games. Should anything go wrong, McLain management is prompt, pleasant, and attentive to whatever needs to be done, It is always very clean, has been updated without losing its authenticity and is in good repair.
We have stayed here 4x and each time has been perfect!! I am so grateful for the owner sharing it with us---it is truly the dream beach house I would own if I could. We love that it is at the quieter end of the strand where it is a little more peaceful and just steps to the sand. It is close to the pier, and even closer and easily walkable to the harbor should you want to have a meal there and a margarita and not have to worry about parking and driving. There are several other cottages near it that give it the feel of stepping back in time and vacationing like they did in the 40's-70's, and the neighbors are great!
Its cozy enough for a romantic weekend, yet spacious enough for a family of six to be comfortable. Each year we have had my son;s birthday party in the back yard and had everything we needed to have a great time! There are modern amenities, yet you could turn off even your phone and be content. I have no words to express how much I love this delightful cottage!!!!!!!!
