“Quaint cafe serving good food”
Reviewed 20 December 2013

Situated on the south coast highway. This place is a little gem. The cafe provides a decent amount of seating. They also show old black and white movies on the wall. We had brunch. I ordered two soft poached eggs on wholewheat toast, and orange juice. My wife had corn beef hash with hash browns, and water. She commented that this was the best cafe served meal she had had in a long time. I also enjoyed my meal. Pricing was very reasonable. We will be back the next time we are in Oceanside.

“Mouthwatering with a Dose of Nostalgia!”
Reviewed 6 November 2013

We had eaten at Bessie's a couple of years ago, right before it closed down. Awful. Fast forward to post-remodeling and new ownership ... walked there today for lunch and was pleasantly surprised! They did a remarkable job remodeling the restaurant; nice counter with high-backed stools, a couple of booths, a couple of tables, as well as a few tables outside (although not sure I would want to eat out there ... busy Coast Highway!). The walls are covered in vintage era artwork and there is a silent movie playing along the back wall. Very cool!

We chose a table by the front window and were promptly greeted with menus and a hearty welcome. Minutes later our waiter brought us a complementary plate of warm pumpkin bread and soft butter. Yum!

Our lunch choices were a pattymelt and a reuben, both served with fries (or choice of soup), and accompanied by lettuce, tomato and pickle. The serving size is HUGE ... somehow we managed to pretty much finish all of it. The corned beef on the reuben was extremely tender with no fat. Fries were plentiful and crisply fried. Not sure about the other reviews mentioning the food as "average" ... sure, it's diner food, but isn't that the point? It is, after all, Bessie's 1929 Diner! Not sure what the restroom situation is; I know there are no 'public' restrooms, and not sure if there is one available if you go through the kitchen. Probably need to ask that before you settle in to eat.

The food was good, the service superb and plenty to look at while waiting for your food to arrive. At the end of our meal our waiter boxed up the piece of pumpkin bread left on our plate ... and added a few extra, as well.

Lunch for 2 (with dessert to go) at just over $20. Hard to beat. Highly recommend and will definitely return.

“Good Food”
Reviewed 17 September 2013

I stopped by with my boyfriend this morning. At first, the waitress seemed helpful but when we actually sat down to eat, she turned out to be neglectful and rude. The dishes were dirty but the food was good and in large portions. Nothing really stood out to make this a regular place except for the fun environment and theme. The complimentary cranberry and cream cheese bread was gross. Bland, dry, and seemed store bought. We sat outside because it was so stuffy inside. There was only one umbrella which another couple was using so we sat in the sun. When they left shortly after, nobody even offered us the umbrella. It may have just been a bad time. We're willing to give them another try.

“Good breakfast and lunch place a block from Amtrak/bus station.”
Reviewed 27 July 2013 via mobile

I have eaten here several times. breakfast is average to above average , portions are large, good value for the size and quality. had an excellent chicken fried steak and eggs today gravy was five star. its a weekend so I tried a cup of their menudo. can't recommend it, it was just like a canned product. excellent atmosphere 1929 style, but they always play their ragtime music too loud. my service has always been excellent. they are open from 7 am to 2 pm, but will stay open to 3 if they are busy.
