“Excellent New Property, But Beware of the Trains.”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

Marriot has hit a home run with this newly designed, six story hotel. The decor is invigorating, bright, airy, delightful. The rooms also sport a fresh design approach. You can't beat the location with the Oceanside boardwalk and beaches just one block away.

The building has rooms on all four sides, most with balconies. The full ocean views are the west side, with partials on the north and south. The only thing to be aware of, as great a location it is, the train tracks are right up against the property on the east side.

Noise from trains if a factor. The nosiest rooms are on the east side, or "city" views, with the lowest floors the nosiest, and the upper floors perhaps a little less noisy. We got a room here on-the-fly so they were mostly full, and stayed on the 5th floor, "city", aka train tracks side. It was late at night when we checked in and the check-in agent advised us of noise, not specifying what kind of noise. They demonstrated a white-noise generator at the desk, explaining theses were available in the rooms to counteract the "noise". I thought how could there be that much noise from such a small town at night? Then we found out once up in the room.

The good new is that the tracks mostly serve Amtrak, the Surfliner, and short freight trains that did not seem to run between about 12:30 AM to 6 AM.

Also good new regarding the trains, they are a great, fast, convenient and economical way to get to downtown San Diego, saving 35 miles of stressful freeway driving. The station is just one block south.

Although we could have upgraded to a partial or full ocean view away from the train view, we stayed put and got used to the "occasional" trains. I can't tell you what the noise is like on the other sides, but my guess is that it is much less than the "city" view side.

Also be advised that hotel parking is valet only at $24/day. Your only other option is an adjacent city lot with all validations expiring at midnight daily (I think it said $5/day.) So, to park overnight, you must go out past midnight to purchase another 24 hour validation from the machine.

Killer buffet, continental breakfast included. All in all, a great place to hang out.

Room Tip: Avoid east, city view, aka train, side.

My two boys and I stayed a week at this hotel and loved it. The location is walking distance to the pier, the movie theater, restaurants you name it you can walk to it. The room was very clean and the large and made us feel right at home. We were on the backside of the hotel close to the railroad tracks so you will hear the train! We had a great stay and would highly recommend this hotel.

Stayed one night for a last minute get away. We do this often with our friends. Found the hotel to have a new keyless system that was not easy to use, especially the elevator. Spent a lot of time figuring out why we were not getting to our room. Other guests were telling us how to use the card to make the elevator work.. Definitely not enough elevators for the amount of people. The breakfast was not ready on time and the coffee took forever to be put out. The toasters didn't work and they were out of food quickly.definetly wood think twice about coming back here. Disappointed.

Room Tip: West facing away from train station

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to review our property- I am sorry to hear that you left our hotel in disappointment. The purpose of the key reader in the elevator is for the safety and security of our guests; certainly not to create difficulty returning to your room,. Also, thank you for the feedback regarding breakfast, I will be sure to share it with our breakfast team for continuous improvement.

Despite the unfortunate experience, we hope you visit us again so that we can leave a better impression. Thank you again for staying with us.

Kind regards,
Kathleen Maola

As a long time San Diego area resident I've visited many of the area hotels and found this one to be a great bargain. We stayed here on the spur of the moment last night with our five kids aged 15-21. My husband and I could not believe the great rate for a new hotel across the street from the beach that included a full breakfast. And then when we went upstairs to the rooftop pool we found the view nothing less than spectacular. I don't think their is a better coastal view in the whole county. Be cautioned though, the city view rooms face directly on the busy railroad tracks, however we all slept through the night without waking. If you are a light sleeper you might want to spring for the extra ocean view room charge. The room was nicely appointed. The staff was friendly. Many restaurants within walking distance.

First off, this hotel is not in San Diego and in fact is 50 minutes away from downtown San Diego. It's closer to Orange County and places like San Clemente and Capistrano. It is convenient for Legoland and only one block away from a very nice beach. Traffic is a little congested to get to the hotel from the freeway due to construction and a lot of beach tourists who come to this very nice ocean side city.
The rooms are very nice especially as the hotel is new. We had two rooms which we upgraded to ocean view to keep away from the train tracks which run right behind the hotel. They say they have white noise running to keep noise levels down but we didn't want to take a chance with the two toddlers age 3 and 6. Rooms had two queen beds each plus a sofa bed which is nice. Balcony was a plus too for the ocean view rooms. 2nd floor rooms had some with balcony opening to a terrace area but we decided not to get these as people then can walk into your balcony area. Housekeeping was a little flakey with towels not being re-supplied properly requiring phone calls to get hand towels or enough wash cloths.
Breakfast was included which was nice. The servers did a good job keeping up as there was a big crush of eaters everyday around 8:30. Items were standard Marriott quick hot breakfast. There was a very tasty restaurant (Hello Betty Fish House) which you could room charge your meal next door. Lots of other places close by. Amtrak is also very convenient and within walking distance of three blocks.
Valet parking at $24 per night was only offered. Most city lots and street parking did not allow overnight but are close by if you get tired of popping your car in and out with the valet.
Elevators are a little slow but big so holds more but normally requires a wait for a car. Lobby is nice and the pool on the roof though small has a very scenic view looking at the beach and pier. Exercise room is nice and looks into the pool.
All in all, hotel was a very nice place to stay.

We were down here for a family funeral and it was this hotel that made it a bit easier. The view was wonderful and listening to the ocean really relaxed us after a very difficult day. The staff was great and breakfast more than met our needs. I used the fitness room and it had a great view.
