“Wedding and reception review”
Reviewed 15 August 2014

I spent three days at the Ojai Retreat recently, as a bridesmaid, for a wedding and reception here. It was beautifully manicured and extremely scenic and relaxing. I spent much time with the nursery grounds director and she put a lot of love and effort into ensuring that the retreat grounds and wedding looked beautiful. The view was excellent and the facilities for wedding and reception were perfect venues for this occasion. It was a fun filled, spiritual experience!

I recently got married here on 8/3/14 and had my whole family from out of town stay here as well for the wedding. Things couldn't have turned out better. The grounds are well kept and beautifully manicured, rooms were clean, and the breakfast in the morning was great. The views at night are amazing and really gives you a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The staff was always polite and respectful of your privacy as well. If your looking for a place to get married, or a relaxing place with a great view in Ojai look no further.

Recently we stayed for 2 nights at the Ojai Retreat. It is blissfully quiet & was a true Retreat from our road weary travels. No TVs! AC! Lovely, recently remodeled quiet rooms! Views! Welcoming staff! Awesome, healthy breakfast buffet included in room rate! I had stayed there before and was glad to share it this time with my husband. It is minutes away from Ojai's locally owned businesses and restaurants. Be sure to visit the Ojai Valley Historical Museum, Bart's Books and Bocalli's Italian restaurant & Meditation Mount to name a few favorites.

Room Tip: If you prefer a room with view of Topa Topas, ask for it.

We needed a few days away and chose Ojai as our destination. The Ojai Retreat was described on the internet as one of the most relaxing b&bs in the US, so we made reservations. It did not fail us. We stayed in the Balcony room which is newly redone. There was a fantastic view from the balcony and the bed, through old oaks, down to the valley of Meiners Oaks below. A very healthy breakfast of local fresh pastries, fruit, hard-boiled eggs, and housemade granola is served to be eaten outside under the oaks with the same valley view. Yoga classes are taught several days a week, if you are interested. The town of Ojai is a 5-minute drive away, and the funky town of Meiners Oaks, very near the Retreat, has several quirky and delicious restaurants. Overall, I'd stay here again. The atmosphere is peaceful. People are quiet. It's just a great place to unwind.

Booked at the Ojai Retreat based on the glowing reviews from Tripadvisor. Unfortunately, the reviews left me wondering where everyone else stayed.
First the Pros:
1. Reservations and pre-visit communication - Clare was a pleasure to talk to and very helpful with all aspects of my reservation and my questions.
2. Staff - The staff I encountered were very friendly and helpful. The housekeeping staff were warm and did their job well.
3. Breakfast - Excellent breakfast with a variety of hot and cold choices. Recommend that you eat just outside the breakfast room and enjoy the view.
4. Quiet - Very quiet property where all the guests and staff respect the serenity.

Cons:
1. Topa-Topa room - On the second floor of the main house. Room was described as small and it is indeed very small. Tight, tight quarters. Two windows with one overlooking the roof and the other looking out at the trees. No real view. Room was circa 70's as was the shared bath. I have stayed in many B&B's and this one felt old and tired. Patched plaster on walls, old paint, rust on bathroom accessories. Oddly enough, when I saw the "all guest bathroom" that was below the Topa-Topa room (adjacent to the patio for breakfast), I saw a renovated nice-looking bathroom and wondered why the rooms upstairs were left in such a dated condition, while the less used public bathroom was updated.
2. Main house, quiet room - Same 70's feel that is in need of sprucing up. Noticed torn screens in the main room.
3. Grounds - Was looking forward to the "trails" and "paths" that I had read about on the website and Tripadvisor. Instead found a very small, pleasant lawn and garden area surrounded by a fews nature paths that had signs posted at every access point "No walking on the nature paths" Huh???
4. Value - I do not feel that the Topa-Topa room was worth the $140 a night I paid. As I mentioned, I have stayed at many B&B's and appreciate quaint, old rooms and baths, but this room was just small and disappointing. The other rooms and suites on the property may well be beautiful and updated (I didn't see any of them), but the Cozy and Topa-Topa rooms (which I did see) were both lacking in quality.

I really wanted to like this place and was looking forward to my stay. Unfortunately, based on my room, I wouldn't recommend the Ojai Retreat. I do not appreciate properties that have such a disparity in quality and overall experience from room to room. Based on the Topa-Topa room, I feel the property is overrated and offers poor value for the money. Hopefully, my evaluation will help other travelers as well as the owners.

Room Tip: I cannot recommend the Topa-Topa or Cozy room.

If I could give Ojai Retreat 10-stars I definitely would. Ojai Retreat is quiet and serene, sitting on top of a hill overlooking Ojai valley. Service and quality of rooms are top notch and deserve 10 stars.

We chose the Ojai Retreat on the recommendation of a friend. Nestled in the hills, you are rewarded with a sweeping view of the valley after a short drive up a private road.

The Practical
We booked the Sky Suite, which, after having walked around the property, seemed to be the most private of all the cottages. It comes with a kitchenette and an extra room with a door and a day bed. The kitchenette comes with a sink, microwave, fridge (no freezer), plates, silverware and dish soap. The extra room has a table and some chairs, a small armoire, a chest of drawers, and its own air conditioner. The main room has a Queen bed, a nightstand, a folding chair and a window table that you can fold down if you don't need it.

There is plenty of parking. That said, some of the rooms are close to the parking spots, so check out the maps before you pick the room. It's not Grand Central station, but if you're sensitive to that sort of thing you'll want to check it out.

Our room was clean, well maintained and attention to detail was paid throughout.

The Romantic
Did I mention sweeping views of the valley below? You can see that view from your bed as you're lying in it. Two wine glasses are also provided in the room...

You can find a quiet corner anywhere on the property. There are park benches by the hiking path (which was closed when we were there), or chairs in the garden. We sat in lounge chairs by the waterfall and looked up at the stars.

The Breakfast
Yum! Scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, breads of all kinds, cheese, fruit, yoghurt, cereal, coffee, tea and juice. You can have breakfast in the common room, outside on the common patio or in your room. The scrambled eggs are not run of the mill - they are delicious!

The Hushed Tones
It IS a retreat and is very quiet.

All in all, it was a very relaxing sojourn made so by the comfortable environment the Ojai Retreat provided.

Room Tip: The Sky Suite probably has the most privacy.
