I've been going to Oroville a couple times a year for a few years now, and am pretty familiar with their hotels. There are four nicer, pretty much 3* hotels in town: this one, the Gold Country Casino, Feather Falls casino, and the Comfort Inn. The Comfort Inn, located along the hotel strip by the freeway to Chico, used to be the only nice place in town. It's still a nice place, but the other three are now nicer choices, unless you are passing through and just want a place by the freeway. This hotel (HIX) is just over half a mile from the freeway, on the highway which eventually leads to the lake (going by Gold Country). This hotel is surrounded by the "America's Best Value Inn," which is somewhat strange. It's nearest to, but not within walking distance of, the historic downtown. It's on an unattractive commercial road with WalMart, gas stations, and the like. The two casinos (Gold Country and Feather Falls) are outside the city limits, with Feather Falls not being near anything.
As a platinum Priority Club member, I was given an "executive room," which is slightly larger than the other rooms. They are all near the elevator, though (not too much problem with noise). The rooms are not quite as nice and spacious as Gold Country's, but larger and more modern than Feather Falls's. This hotel has an indoor pool, whereas Gold Country has none, and Feather Falls' is outdoors. An indoor pool seems rather strange in a warm climate like Oroville's, but it would be difficult to place due to its location (would it face the highway or the Best Value Inn rooms? And how could one keep the Best Value Inn guests from using it?). Its gym is functional but smaller than Feather Falls's; Gold Country has none.
Despite being on the highway, the rooms are very quiet and comfortable. A light sleeper, I easily slept without earplugs. The breakfast is modestly described as "Continental," but it's really a full, hot breakfast. It was among the better of the Holiday Inn Express/Hampton Inn-type breakfasts I've had. The Comfort Inn's breakfast is far more modest, and the casinos don't offer a free breakfast. There's no other restaurant here. There's no nice place to eat at or near Feather Falls (just a coffee shop and the buffet), whereas the Gold Country has one of the best restaurants in northern California (the Steakhouse), as well as a coffee shop and a buffet which is nicer than Feather Falls's. In terms of casinos, I like Feather Falls the best in terms of layout, payout, and amenities.
So there are your choices. This place has nice rooms and is nearer to the highway or downtown. Gold Country has the nicest rooms and restaurants, but no pool or gym. Feather Falls has the nicest casino and outdoor pool, but lacks in eating choices (and is out in the boonies). You'll probably be happy with any choice.
