I was hesitant about staying at Asilomar, but I had a great time. It's close to Monterey and the beach in front is fabulous. The room was large. Sparsely decorated, but large. It had a king bed, one night stand, a desk and two chairs. The bathroom was definitely dated. The yellow laminate counter top and yellow tile floor appeared to be from the 1970s, but it was clean, had a separate vanity area with a sink just outside the bathroom, and had a small tub/shower combo. We had an ocean view, so even thought it was cold we sat on our patio. We were in Spindrift on the ground floor, so we were close to the boardwalk leading to the beach.
Breakfast was adequate. We had eggs, bacon, potatoes, juice and coffee. The food was lukewarm, but saved us the hassle of finding a restaurant. If you aren't part of a group, you will be seated in a side dining room. And the tables are almost all large, seating 8 or 10, so expect to sit with others.
Overall, I had a great time, and I'm sure we will be returning.

This is the third conference I've attended at Asilomar Conference Center. As a former girl scout camp designed by Julia Morgan (she designed Heart Castle), there are a variety of accommodations build from rustic wood (think sink outside of the toilet-shower room, no TV or phone) to upgraded (with fireplaces and newer amenities). Some rooms have ocean views. The location is the best thing about the grounds--just north of Pebble Beach right on the ocean front. There are lovely walking paths through the preserved dunes with signage describing the flora and fauna. Meals are communal style and come included in the price of accommodations; however there may be other plans. Food is fresh and well prepared, but not much choice (usually two choices for breakfast and lunch). All meals including dinner are served at a set time. Overall, a reasonably priced place to stay in a area known for expensive lodgings. What makes it all worthwhile? The gorgeous beach location. Oh, yes--winter is a great time to go. Usually no fog even though it can be cool. Just bundle up. We lucked out and had sunny days in February.

I love this place, it is rustic without being too funky or run down. the grounds are delightful to stroll around, the buildings interesting. as a 'leisure guest' (not there with a conference) the rooms come with a nice breakfast not like at a chain hotel but a real warm meal. eggs, meat, starch and hot cereal, coffee, tea, juice. you eat in the dining room at a real table on real plates. the beds are very nice and new with good bedding, while the carpeting is not so new. but it is clean and the staff very friendly. there is a nice restaurant next door, the fishwife, and the ocean is just across the street. our room had views of the ocean, (peeking thru the trees) and we could hear the waves. not all the rooms have views. the 'rec hall' has pool tables, fireplace, a funky piano, and games. we spent time there after dinner as a family and really enjoyed ourselves. there is something low key and warm about the whole place. the summer camp vibe permeates the place I guess. Asilomar is not far from monterey, pacific grove and carmel but far enough that you can rest and relax.

Room Tip: the older buildings have smaller rooms. the newer building has larger rooms, better for families.

A group of friends chose Asilomar for a three-day reunion and sightseeing, and we were delighted with our accommodations (including price) and the beautiful locale. Though there were misunderstandings about our booking, everything was resolved quickly, and we had five rooms in one of the buildings. They set up for a fire each evening so we could enjoy conversation in front of the fireplace in the large living room of the building. The breakfasts were varied and good. We enjoyed taking the boardwalk down to the beach. Asilomar served as the perfect base for exploring the whole Monterey peninsula.

It feels like it should be a hotel/resort, but also like it is short- staffed. We'd been promised a room online with a fireplace, which when we arrived had been supposedly booked by someone else. I really protested that that was the reason we'd just driven two hours, but to no avail. They said the computers weren't their problem, and that we should have called instead of reserved online. Then they put is into a neighboring room, then moved our things to the new room the next day. I don't think anyone ever was in the original one, only that the staff hadn't cleaned it before they left and the clerks at the desk couldn't fix that. THe setting is lovely. Can feel as if you're at someone else's quilting or religious conference. Food is reminiscent of big conferences with eggs in catering trays.

This was a fantastic place to stay while visiting the Pacific grove area. The center is located in a state park with walking trails that take you right to the ocean. The main buildings were designed for the YWCA by Julie Morgan. Julia was the first female architect to be registered in California. She designed the Hearst castle. The main lodge and the large dinning hall are great examples of the arts and crafts style. Our room was small and rustic but affordable and we had access in our building to a common room with fireplace. Meals in the main hall were fantastic and we met many interesting people over breakfast. We were able to rent bikes at the centre and bike into Monterey. The staff were friendly and very helpful. I would love to go back.

My wife and I stayed at Asilomar Conference Grounds for one night at a rate of about $118 including breakfast. The location in Pacific Grove is on state property next to the ocean. You have to walk across a boardwalk in sand dunes and cross a road to get to the beach. There are deer on the property.
This is not a deluxe property in terms of rooms or food. It is not camping as you have heated rooms and nice beds and bathroom..they just are of older design with some updating. You go for its location and quietness in a forest like environment next to the ocean. Rooms are old fashioned but quite acceptable, at least the one we had. It was bigger than many hotel rooms I have stayed in. Our room had a porch with chairs. Amenities are minimal.
Breakfast is a buffet style and served as you walk through a line. Typical scrambled eggs, bacon and potatoes along with fruits and cereals. Coffee is on table and you have to ask for tea. You sit with a small group of independent travelers. Around you are also people attending conferences at their own tables. Food is only average. I would not buy lunch or dinner here, which is an option.
