This was reminiscent of summer camp but upscale and pricey. My room was comfortable with a great bed, fireplace, and wide glass patio doors overlooking a wooded area where the deer hung out. The central lodge is similar to those built in the national parks, and coastal dunes were adjacent to the property. The real surprise was the top-quality food and efficient service in the dining room. The dining hall was a bit of a hike from our rooms, and walking along the road or across asphalt parking lots undermined any sense of being in nature. This was a good setting for our small conference but definitely too pricey if I were traveling on vacation.

Rustic. No TV - but free wi-fi and decent cell coverage. I would absolutely get an ocean view. That said, the grounds are amazing, there is a cool boardwalk/trail sort of thing that is easy to walk, with amazing views. The social lodge is beautiful with a gigantic fireplace, awesome rustic architecture, pool tables, and games. The staff were all very nice and everything was immaculate. If you are in to luxury, go somewhere else. If you are outdoorsy and easy to please in terms of amenities, you will like it. I am only giving an average rating because of a few minor details that bugged me, which are listed in my "tips" section - but the location and views were spectacular!

Room Tip: The spindrift rooms face the ocean. When you make a reservation over the phone, they do not include taxes and other random fees for...IDK? Everything and anything the govt. wants to tax? Was surprised by an additional 80.00 in charges at check in. I was irritated at that point and sort of stopped listening to the clerk....fine, here's my credit card, can I go now? We also asked for a refrigerator which was 10.00 a night. I sort of felt nickeled and dime'd. After a long drive I didn't have the energy to complain - just wanted to get on with it - BUT a quote is a quote and in my opinion should include all mandatory taxes and fees. Also, IMHO the refrigerator should be free, especially at such high nightly rates for a very bare bones type room.

Asilomar is a rustic, "camp-like" retreat center. The accommodations are very nice but not fancy. Our room had a wood-burning fireplace, with fire logs supplied, and a great balcony. We could hear the ocean at night. The main lodge has pool tables and a huge fireplace, and wifi, though no TVs. A lovely retreat, and a great location within the State Park along the ocean. Close by to Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove, and the 17-Mile Drive. We will definitely return.

Was there for a 5 day quilting retreat. Food was good but way too much of it at every meal. Rooms are BASIC at best. Very dark with all the wood everywhere, low lighting (my room was in the Scripps building). Wifi was patchy and not available at all in some locations (e.g. Merrill Hall). Bathrooms are basic for the price, as are the rooms. Bed was comfortable. You can stay in a better room at the Hilton in Monterey for a similar price.

But what Asilomar had is location to the beach, fresh air, and rustic charm. No phones or TVs in the room, and it's hard to keep your windows open on cool nights as the smell of smoke from the fireplaces in the communal areas and some bedrooms is very strong.

Distances to locations can be great AND it must be a nightmare place for those with accessibility issues to get around as there are MANY steps and stairs ands NO elevators. I had to schlep my heavy suitcase up a flight of stairs to the top floor and no help was offered with this when I checked in.

It's a lovely place, but expensive for what you get (or don't get). If you're looking for rustic charm almost in a camp style situation, then this is for you. If you're looking for the mod cons, go elsewhere.

I've been there for a conference.
The buildings were designed by a famous architect tied to the 'arts & crafts' movements and still mantain a great charme and are definitely pleasant.
The chapel, we used as the main hall for our conference is lovely.
But I've to say that, despite the very attractive common spaces and halls, rooms were very simple and with a just average confort.
The landscape is truly unique and fascinating, with its special light and colours, very meditative and suggestive.
The restaurant is not bad but nor it is excellent. The name of dishes was fascinating but the actual meal was sometimes a little disappointing.
I've observed something curious regarding beverages... on each table a sheet informed customers they had to ask for water, because that part of California is poor of it and they value it very highly, but on each of those tables there was plenty of pinches full of ice tea... is not ice tea made with water?
