Owner description: The Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course, the Peninsula's only municipal golf course, is often called the "poor man's Pebble Beach."

Good value golf on the Monterey peninsula. Front nine is a tree lined parkland. Back nine is more links like with views of the ocean. Well looked after and in good condition. Not too challenging which makes it good fun for holiday golf.

For what you get and what you pay, certainly a bargin. 45 to walk on a weekday.

Staff was helpful and there was a marshal on the course the day we played. Pace of play was quick and we played in under 4 hours. It was not really busy and the locals playing in front of us flew around.

I enjoyed the front and there are some good holes. The back to back par fives were good holes and both 8 and 9 were long and into the wind. The back to back par 3's to start I am sure do not help pace of play on busy days but I enjoyed the front more than I thought I would from reading the reviews.

Our weather changed during the round and the wind picked up to about 25 mph. Made the back 9 interesting as the wind was a cross wind on many of the holes. Made the course much tougher and we were thankful that the fairways were wide

Had always wanted to play it and glad I did. Love to do it again some day. Take it for what it is and don't expect Pebble and you will have a good time. Would avoid weekends if your travel plans allow.

Had lunch in the clubhouse twice and found the food very good if maybe a little on the expensive side.

This course is short, however tight fairways on the front side and dramatic views on the back make up for it. The course is a great value for the money. My suggestion is to walk and soak in the views.

Read the other reviews ... no need to repeat facts ... front side, back side ... conditions due to CA water issues, etc. The real point of it is U GET TO GOLF ON THE MONTEREY COAST - and you do not have to break the bank, spend the grand babies college book fund, nor hock the wife's anniversary diamond necklace - cause she might just give ya a rawhide "neck wrap" ... do what I do, let her go shopping, and cover some of your costs by playing at PGMC.

To be clear: Pebble Beach this is not. But for under $50 (we paid $44 midweek) you can play PG 12 times for the rate for one round at Pebble.
This is really 2 golf courses. From the clubhouse, the front nine goes out away from the water with houses on both sides. While interesting, if this were all there were at PG, it would be just another municipal. After the turn, however, you cross the road and all of the back 9 is right on or above the coastline, wrapped around the very scenic lighthouse. The holes closest to the water are separated from the actual coastline by a 2 lane road, but for the money it can't be beat.
The back nine in particular has a definite Scotland, links course vibe -- rolling fairways which naturally wander among the dunes. To be fair, it's a muni and the fairways show it with the usual uneven mowing, etc., and the driving range is a long hike (for walkers) from the clubhouse. For the money and the location, however, this is a fabulous deal.
