Owner description: The Monarch Sanctuary is open from sunrise to sunset, but volunteer monarch docents, who assist with the viewing of monarchs and can answer questions about the butterflies and their migration, are only there from 12pm-3pm as available. It is highly recommended that you go to the Sanctuary when a docent is present. There is no charge to visit the Sanctuary, but donations are accepted. The Monarchs arrive in the Sanctuary towards the end of October, and leave around the beginning of March. The monarch population peaks the week after Thanksgiving. The monarch migration to Pacific Grove is so inspiring that Pacific Grove is nicknamed "Butterfly Town, U.S.A." The community has always welcomed the butterflies and sought their protection. Citizens of Pacific Grove voted to create an additional tax to create the Monarch Grove Sanctuary, led by dedicated volunteers. The volunteers at the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary are from the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History. The Museum, which is just about mile away from the Sanctuary, has a large exhibition on monarch butterflies containing videos and interactive experiences for visitors of all ages. As both the Museum and Sanctuary are free, it's great to pair them together to get the most out of your experience to the monarch Sanctuary.

I made this trip earlier in the year in hopes of spotting the Monarchs but none were there. This trip was completely different as numerous clusters of Monarch were visible. A docent was on site with a spotting scope for the public's use. As the temperature warmed up the Monarchs started to flutter which makes for wonderful photos.

In fairness the weather was rather cool so there weren't the thousands of butterflies we were told by someone at the Visitor's Center said there would be. But there were probably several hundred so it was fun watching them fly through the trees. This would be especially fun for children and families that are interested in nature.

The citizens of Pacific Grove have raised a specific tax to prepare a home for the Monarch butterflies who come here to spend the winter. It is a lovely place with Eucalyptus trees and flowering bushes and when the sun shines there they are: beautiful Monarchs... by the dozens. I only wished they would ask people not to talk so loudly. While the butterflies do not seem to mind it disturbs a bit the magic of the place.

How fortunate we were to pass through Monterey/Pacific Grove in late Oct to catch the Monarchs arriving for the winter. There were already a few hundred at the sanctuary and it was warm enough in the afternoon to heat them so they could fly. Hundreds still clung to the trees and many were also fluttering overhead - what an inspiring sight. Be sure to check the bottlebrush bushes near the back of the grove for a close up view, and also walk past the educational center (red buildings across the alley from the Monarch Grove Inn) to check the back of the eucalyptus grove where hundreds were sunning themselves on the south side of the grove.

Beautiful walk, helpful docents and almost right in town, easy to walk and we did see Monarch flying, not as many as we hoped, but we were a little too early; Evidently, November is a better month. But it was lovely weather, we did see Monarchs out and about and a very pleasurable experience
