Was not impressed with the Deer Haven Inn at all.
For the location (and the money) I was expecting something more quaint and friendly.
Checked in early evening and felt like I was checking in with the night watchman. No friendly greeting, no explanation of amenities (Breakfast, ice machine, pet policy, etc). It seemed like just saying, "What is the name on the reservation" was a lot of effort for this guy. Really felt like Motel 6 service, maybe worse.
The room was clean enough but when I first walked in I got hit in the face with the smell of industrial cleaner. Very strong, unpleasantly fruity smell. Stayed in a 'pet friendly' room so that may have had something to do with it.
There was a hole in my very very thin bed sheets. Overall, the bed was uncomfortable. Pillows were horrible. Very bad night sleep.
It was very quiet- no street or neighbor noise.
Being a pet friendly hotel there was little area to walk a dog. Usually, pet friendly hotels will have a nice patch of grass out back for your dog. I had to cross the street in what may have been an abandoned lot to find something suitable.
Breakfast was totally inadequate. It's supposed to be served from 8-10am and at 8:30a I was still waiting for the coffee to brew. Then, there was more waiting while pastries (if you can call them that) were brought out. Bad breakfast selection all around in an area too small for two people to navigate.
Being the height of the season the room was $225 for the night- way too high for what was offered. I would have gladly stayed at a Motel 6 for cheaper and the same experience.
If you're just passing through in the off-season and need a quick place to crash- this place will do.
If you're looking for a quant Monterey experience do not go here. I would try some of the places closer to Cannery Row. If you have trouble finding a place, I'd go with the Motel 6/Comfort Inn route. Do not go here.

We Booked This Room For My SoNs 5Th Birthday Weekend. We All Loved It. You Have WIld Life, Beach, And Cannery Row, As Well As Anything ElSe So Very Close. The Beach Is Walking Distance, Cannery Row Is Just A 5 Minute Drive, Fishermans Wharf Two Minutes From That. The Wild Life Were Deer, Out Our Window, As Well As In The Parking Lot, Also Birds Of Lovely Sound, And Raccoons. The Room Was Clean, The Beds Were Soft, The Fireplace Was Warm (Propane) And Set Up Like A Heater So It KickS Itself Off Once Temp Was Reached. Everyone Was VeRy Nice, Breakfast Was Basic And Can Take Back To Your Room. Breakfast Was Either Raisin Bran, Honey Nut Cheerios, Or Danishs. Bathroom Was Clean, They Even MakE The Toilet Paper Fancy. Its Peaceful, Not Expensive, And Family Friendly. It Will Now Be The Only Hotel We Stay AT When We Are There. (Sorry My Phone Thinks It Has To Caps EveRy WOrd.)

I booked this room for a quick overnight trip with my husband. I was a little worried after pulling up and seeing people painting but was glad to find the rooms clean and comfortable. The man (owner?) at the front desk was very gracious and I think he could tell I was a little apprehensive and even called our room to make sure we were happy with it once we had checked in. We had a king room with fireplace. The bed was comfortable and the fireplace was a nice feature. The continental breakfast was simple, toast, cereal, muffins, but the coffee was hot and the orange juice was fresh!

The location was nice and a short walk to the beach and a small drive to restaurants, stores and the wharf and aquarium. Overall we had a nice stay and would return. If you are looking for an affordable place to stay that is clean and comfortable, with complimentary parking this is a good place to stay.

Husband and I stayed here for 1 night; this would have been a comfortable room for multiple nights though, and there is lots to do nearby. Asilomar Beach is a short walk away, and Cannery Row and Monterey Aquarium are just a few minutes by car. The room was fairly spacious and newly remodeled, bed was comfortable. The breakfast was just the basics: cold cereal, instant oatmeal, quartered muffins, juice, coffee.

Although the exterior of the "Inn" looks cute and renovated, the interiors leave much to be desired. Although there weren't any outward signs of dirt, things simply didn't have that clean, crisp feel that one usually hopes for when staying in a room. The floors didn't seem clean and there were other funky elements, my favorite of which were the picture frames which were screwed directly into the wall, after which the screws had been painted over.

None of the staff was engaging or put actual effort into being polite. The continental breakfast was rather disappointing and, although we got a good deal on the rate, we were still rather disappointed. Fortunately, there is so much to do that we spent little time in our room. Pacific Grove is certainly a wonderful place to go, so don't hesitate to make the trip. The wifi did work and that was very useful as we explored our options.

Although Pacific Grove is a charming town and you can walk to the water from here, it is not terribly convenient, unless you want to gaze at the entrance to Asilomar. It's too far from town to walk comfortably, especially at night.

All in all, there are probably good reasons why most of the pictures on the website show the building exteriors, deer and other local highlights. There are only two small pictures of the room interiors available with good reason.
