Monarch Resort
Ranked #15 of 17 Hotels in Pacific Grove
Reviewed 9 August 2014 via mobile

Our children live in Pacific Grove so when we visit we look for reasonably priced, clean, and comfortable accommodations. The Monarch Resort has been our choice destination for the past several years. The rooms are quiet, easily accessible and reasonably priced. The location makes it easy to get around to all attractions and the beaches. The resort is well worth considering when traveling through the area.

My wife and I met another couple at this hotel; they had stayed there on prior visits and we went along with their choice of accommodations. The Monarch Resort is easy to find and there is ample parking around the property. The facility itself is pretty well appointed with a nice (although small) pool in the center of the main building.

The hotel staff were all friendly and efficient; we were clearly welcome there. The hotel offers a free Continental breakfast which was a nice feature of our reservation; they had a pretty good range of foods available in the morning buffet and the breakfast period lasted from 6:30-10:00.

The only negative features about the Resort are that the walls are a bit thin and we could occasionally hear the people in the room over ours as they thumped across their floor, and the facility itself has seen better days. Some might call the appointments comfortable but the place showed its age.

BUT, you get what you pay for and the Monarch Resort is well located for Carmel and Monterey attractions, has some nice restaurants in its trade area and was very reasonably priced. In spite of its limitations, this is a nice place to stay and we'll likely stay there on our next visit to Carmel.

We stayed here after the hotel we booked via Hotwire.com was apparently cancelled by Expedia, even though it was paid for in full. The lady at the Sunset Inn where we were supposed to stay, found us this room. Even though the decor was a bit 80's and a little worn, it was spotlessly clean. We had a slight problem with the flushing of the toilet, but the maintenance man came a sorted it out straight away. There was, however, no air conditioning, so sleep was a little uncomfortable. The beds were lovely and comfy and the amenities were good. The free breakfast was served in room 106, which was just a bedroom and there were only three tables. When we went for breakfast, the room was full, so we had to give it a miss. However, as it was free, I don't feel that we can complain! Overall, an OK stay.

We were placed in this hotel by hotels.com after the hotel I booked a month previous cancelled our reservation literally as I was getting on the airplane due to "overbooking"! What?? Another review for another time. Seeing that I couldn't take the time to research another hotel out as I was getting on the plane, I accepted hotel.com's offer to place us in another hotel in the area. I assumed they wouldn't put us in no-tell motel, but it's exactly what they did. We arrived and walked into the lobby. First thing I noticed was how horrible the lobby was. The old 1970's era rugs were stained and dirty and needed replacing. The doors were all beat up and dirty. The counters were Formica. The place was completely sketchy. The woman at the desk herself looked totally unprofessional. We got the key and my daughters aNd I went upstairs to check it out. The entire hotel was dirty and beat up and smelled like stale cigarettes. A bunch of old plants lined the hallways with some fake rock formations holding them. We went inside the room-- omg seriously? Old dirty rugs, old cigarette smell, a 1980's tube tv, sheets with homes in them. Absolutely no air conditioning. My daughter tried to turn on the horrible brass ceiling fan and the chair broke off in her hand. Then tried to open the slider and the screen was rickety and falling out. Not to mention it backed up to some old apartment building with everybody's toys and laundry and trash on their back decks. Thus hotel was not cheap either. For 3 nights it was costing over $800 so you would expect a little more. We decided we absolutely could not stay. Went downstairs to the front and said we needed sur conditioning. Was told "you didn't pay for air conditioning". Are you serious? We said we need to cancel our reservation. They said absolutely not. I got my husband to try to bet us out of it as well. We went thru hotels.com so it was our problem not theirs. So we left and called hotels.vom and told them the entire story about the initial cancellation of the first hotel and then what kind if filthy dump they stuck us in. They took care of canceling it and refunded our money. Kudos to hotels.com at least for their remedy of the situation. We booked our own hotel in Carmel and did fine. When we went out to our car to leave, the woman from the hotel who acted like a freak was waiting outside and snapped pictures of us leaving on her flip phone. What kind of freak show is this place? Word of advice- pay absolutely no attention to the hotels description of their own building and grounds. It's nothing but a dirty, gross, smelly, old sketchy dump from the 1970's, maybe even the 60's. And by the way, when we were trying to leave, another guest was trying to do the same thing. Wonder why...

Room Tip: Here's the tip - don't book it!! Keep looking.

This hotel, located in Pacific Grove, CA, is at the tip of the peninsula and just blocks from 17 Mile Drive. If you opt for a room with a fireplace, you lose the balcony..so the choice is yours. The room was clean; the beds comfortable and the staff was very accommodating. Not the least bit a tourist "trap," it's a quiet retreat away from the hustle and bustle of downtown.

Room Tip: A room with 2 queen beds, but no fireplace was $100/night. GREAT PRICE!

Very clean and nice staff , good continental breakfast too. The pool is a salt water pool w a hot tub as well, only bad thing is how the pool closes early, feel it should be open later but thats just my opinion
