“A gem in the desert”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 July 2014

Marriott's Shadow Ridge is a shining example of why one should take a vacation in the desert. This was our first visit. We stayed for two nights with our eight-year-old son. The activities calendar is full each day. Or you can choose to lay by one of the pools. Our villa had a king-size bed, sofa bed, small kitchen: a sink, refrigerator, microwave, plates, utensils and soap and sponge to wash dishes. The view from our balcony was beautiful: golf course, a pond that had turtles swimming in it and a backdrop of the mountains. Thank you to Brandy, the Activities Director, for her hard work. My son really enjoyed the illusionist show (no extra charge)! We visited two pools each day. Sitting under a canopy in the shade with misters cooling me, I forgot for awhile that it was 106 degrees outside! We will return again - it was difficult to get back in the car and drive home.

Room Tip: Rooms in building 1700 are within walking distance of two pools. Third floor is very quiet.

Third year we stayed at the resort (June 27-July 4). This year we has the best room yet - 1601/1602. Full one bedroom with the lockoff for a total of two bedrooms. Very spacious and the kitchen was very adequate. We have two younger children (7 years old) so we prepared nearly all of our meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner in the unit. We also has two of our friend stay with us for two nights with their two kids (both aged 7) and we still did not feel cramped. We had two queen beds for the adults and 2 sofa pull outs for the kids.

We were within short walking distance to the pool and at night since we were on the lower level on the golf course the kids could run around and play.

The BBQ's were a short walk off the back and worked great. Parking was very adequate and the resort did not see very crowded when we were there.

In terms of activities (other than hanging at the pool), we took the Palm Springs tram up to the top of the mountain. It was incredible and worth a 1/2 day trip. Temperature in Palm Springs was 110, temperature at 9000 ft was a very comfortable 80 degrees. Would love to sped the day hiking up there next time.

Another nice activity was visiting the San Andreas fault oasis which is on the east side of the 10 freeway. This was amazing too. In the middle of barren desert is an oasis as the two plates making the San Andreas fault allowed the aquifer below to come up to the ground level. there was nice hiking in the area and dense palm forests. it was really unique and I would like to explore the area more when we go the next time.

We are planning to return again next year!

Room Tip: We prefer the ground floor so the kids can access the outside better.

Stayed for one night in one of the studio condos. Condos/rooms are very nice but small. The kitchenette is small but very useful and adequate with frig & microwave. bathroom is large with nice size shower in tub. WiFi signal was weak but TV also played various music channels.
A tram comes by all the time to take you to the clubhouse, pools or golf area. The restaurant and bar are very nice with good service.
It would be a nice place for a family with small children as there are several pool areas and play areas. The golf area was a little brown but considering the 100+ heat it looked very playable!
It is a bout a ten minute drive from the 10 freeway (along the way there are markets & fast food places) and the local Aqua Caliente casino.
For singles, not much going on but golf. For families it would be worth the price. All services were well maintained and all employees were helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: Get an upper floor and its more quiet!

Having stayed at numerous time-share connected around the world through our family's Interval / Diamond Resorts Vacation Club connection, our week long stay at the Shadow Ridge Resort was overall...WONDERFUL!.

Again, as we always do with every vacation (as we self research and self book all aspects of our trips) DO YOUR RESEARCH and pre-trip investigation / inquiries... do your due diligence and hopefully most is not all non-petty issues ( as read in most of the bad reviews of many hotels and resorts, etc. by 'reviewers' including this property) might easily be avoided. Before I personally writing any reviews of properties, locations, sites, restaurants, etc. I always take a look through other reviews (a cross section of the excellent and very goods, with particular attention to the 'Terrible' reviews) of the locations I will be reviewing to get a comparison idea of other guest's impressions, issues, etc.

We stayed at the Shadow Ridge property for a full week - making day trips to sites, events and towns in the area with a 2 day side trip to Long Beach (the Queen Mary) and Catalina Island (see other reviews of these great side trips).

Almost every aspect of our stay was wonderful
As four adults travelling with no children be booked full double adjoining suites - 2 bedroom (kings) with full facilities and amenities between the two accommodations. And as part of our pre-trip research and requests, we asked for a location in the quieter buildings, upper floor, near the quiet adult only pool - and we received everything asked for.

Check In / registration upon arrival was fast, efficient, organized and helpful with explanations and directions.

A GREAT ACCOMMODATION - full / large main suite with full kitchen - fully equipped, laundry, dining room, living room with fireplace, 2 balcony over looking the golf course, with the main bedroom and bath as part of the main suite. Then adjoining the main suite was the second smaller, more hotel style room - but certainly comfortable and more than adequate - king bed, full bath, mini kitchen, seating area, balcony - basically a 2nd bedroom+ off of the main suite.
We were located in the 3000 block complex - more adult only oriented - and directly across from the 'quiet' adult pool which was amazingly convenient.

THE POOL: This quiet / adult oriented pool and was THE warmest (92 WONDEFUL DEGREES each day) and one of the most enjoyable pools we have ever used. It may not have been the largest, BUT it was never crowded, there were never any loud noises, rowdy kids, pool games or pool toys etc to contend with. Stated rules for this pool specified no one under age 12 unless accompanied by and adult, not pool toys, no running, etc., etc.
We swam / used the pool at least 3 times a day (the most we as a group have ever used or visited a pool at any resort we have travelled to) made use of the 1st come 1st served roofed and curtained cabanas - which (as were most seating areas) were fitted with water misting systems to help cut the heat. On the one occasion when there were some teens in the pool, it was made evident to their parent to 'cool it' when they became too boisterous and loud.
On most days and pool visits we ( late 40's and early 50 something Canadians) were the youngest in the pool, and many times had the water totally to ourselves - many seniors sunning themselves but just in and out of the water as dip to cool off between sunning sessions.
On our first day arrival and first visit to the pool ( air temp was 106 degrees) I found it very humorous that one pool attendee who was in the pool in full long sleeve crew neck tee shirt had too get out of the 92 degree water as she was cold - never been to Canada in January EH?

Anyhow the pool was wonderful. Any dirt or water debris was usually cleaned up within minutes - again the resort is in the middle / right off or surrounded by the Palm Desert 'desert' - so the desert winds did blow and it is unavoidable for some leaves, etc. to blow into the pool.
We also (maybe because it was the adult pool) had no issue from anyone with bringing our own beverages, etc. into the pool area (as per comments in one 'terrible review of this same property).
At this pool there is no bar or snack counter, so many guests politely brought in their own snacks and drinks - and I assume some of the beverage may have been alcoholic - some of ours were, and done with discretion.
The property is VERY large, and does require a vehicle to get from one portion to another. As we were located at one end of the property in a quiet cul-de-sac, we did drive everywhere - even to see the other pools, other areas of the golf course, and had to drive to the main club house / check-in, mini shop etc.
On our driving tours I do have to comment on the other main pool. It was the central and largest pool complex - and WAS EXTREMELY CROWDED with many people, tons of kids, tons of pool toys, etc. - so obviously was the 'family' pool. It wasn't until our last day that we discovered the new third cluster of buildings (newer accommodations) and the newer pool area central to this complex. Had we known, we would have tried this pool as it appeared much less busy and hectic as the central family pool area.

Of the very few minor issues that I noted listed are a few (again as concrete and constructive Trip Advisor reviewing is becoming a true passion and enjoyment, as is a new career direction in hotel / property consulting (re customer service, décor, service levels, etc.)

Being very cleanliness and first impression / appearance conscious (as a hotel consultant) there were a few minor (at least to us) room notes:
- The past guests in our suites had left all of their garbage and recycling in the storage closet upon their departure and apparently the cleaners missed taking it out. Upon checkout it the guests responsibility to properly dispose of their garbage and recycling at the well marked disposal location near each unit block.
- There were also some mirror scratches etc. to some furniture - which as a critic consultant I would notice / did make note of - where others might not
- Each room / suite was issued a security access card which also operated the security access gates to the hotel / quest room / condo complexes. On more than one occasion cars awaiting access through the gate would be bumper-to-bumper with the car in front of them - attempting to get through (sneak through) while the gate was open for the first car. This could present security issues for unwanted persons / vehicles getting into the paid guest areas.

Other positive components:
Area shopping and restaurants are close at hand.
Getting into Palm Springs proper or to local tourist sites is fast and easy, and it was actually nice to be based out of Palm Springs. It made the desert resort feeling even better.

Over all we had a wonderful time / wonderful experience. Only wished we were able to have stayed longer. LOVED the weather, loved the sun, loved the pool!

Room Tip: As mentioned - for a more quiet 'adults only' feeling, request the quieter buildings near th...

We stayed here for the Kraft Nabisco Championship and it was very nice location. Close to the several golf courses included Mission Hills. A short distance to grocery stores and nice restaurants as well. They have a shuttle service within the resort since it is so large with is a plus. Rooms are clean. Very nice resort. Staff is very accommodating and helpful. Plenty of activities to do on the resort premises. Great pools, and nicely landscaped desert grounds. A great place for the couples and families

The rooms are excellent. Fully equipped kitchen so you can make meals in your room and save money. You need to bring pool towels because they run out. Many activities for young kids - but teens and older would not be impressed.
