“Nice Hotel - Sprawling grounds - Bring backpack!”
Reviewed 2 July 2010

Hotel was nice...great views both inside and out. We were here in June so the temperature was up and the number of people was down. Weekend got a little more crowded, but not unmanageable. My biggest complaint was how far the room was from EVERYTHING! We stayed in an area of the hotel that took three elevators to get to from the parking - it took an average of 15 minutes to get our car/lobby - WOW! Staff was friendly. Room service averaged about an hour for delivery. Charged a resort fee - I hate that! Included free parking. Pool area was nice and was able to get adequate service from cabana bar and inside restaurants. Overall, nice experience. I would not want to stay here during prime months - not sure they are equipped to handle the larger crowds even though it is a large hotel.

After reading all the reviews on Trip Advisor, "I was concerned." Many of the reviewers articulated situations that are not part of the JW Marriott Credo. I will review the hotel step by step based on the complaints I read. We arrived at the Hotel on a Monday afternoon. No check in delay, front desk clerk was cordial. Our room was well appointed, had a great balcony and a very nice view. Room did not have wifi, and someone had dismantled the safe, which I was able to put back together. There were extra towels (quality towels), free bottles of water, and the room a/c was very quiet. Furniture and carpeting were fairly new, and the room walls showed no sign of wear. We tried the Coffee Shop for lunch, portions were generous, and service was excellent. We golfed, and the course is well kept. No delays at tee time, or with golfers in front of us or behind us. We used the Spa, which provided excellent service, and had excellent facilities. We did not take advantage of the Lobby Bar, but it looked like a great place to relax and meet other people. Check out was easy, and we plan to stay there in the future. Even though I live in Los Angeles, I truly felt that I was on vacation. Very nice experience.

One of the pools had so many people in it, you could not see the water from our 4th floor room. What should have been a nice weekend with our family, turned out to be a near nightmare. On the second night of our stay, we found 2 cockroaches in our room and we were appalled. We immediately went to the front desk and although they gave us one free night and a breakfast buffet, there was no attempt to rid the room of further roaches. When we spotted a cockroach in the restaurant, we knew this was a property we would never return to. Noisy crowds cannot be avoided and even the partygoers who ran up and down our hall knocking on doors at 2:00 a.m. could be forgotten. But not the infestation we witnessed. Had we not chosen this hotel to visit with another family, we would have left immediately.

In general stay away from these type of large resort hotels during holidays and peak seasons in the Palm Desert/Palm Springs area if you are there to "relax and unwind". You will encounter large crowds of people who are there to party or have lots of kids. The three main pool area was like MTV Spring Break. The smell of alcohol permeated the area, trash and wet towels all over the place, and the water was murky and not very inviting. The staff did their best to pick up after them and provide service but they were overrun. But there is another pool away from the 21+ partygoers tucked away just past Tuscany restaurant. Though crowded that weekend the staff there did their best to find beach chairs for us and a space for us in a nice spot. Kudos to them. Water was definately cleaner so that was a relief.

The rooms are avg. and a bit dated but clean. Our door was facing the main lobby bar area and we could hear the crowd til about 1 am. Not a big deal for us but if you're sensitive to noise make sure you're located in the wings of the hotel. Overall most everyone on the staff was great to us trying to ensure we had a pleasant stay despite the raucus crowd.

I heard the prime rib/seafood buffet dinner at Lakeview was supposed to be great but we were underwhelmed by the crab and oysters. Tuscany restaurant was great though. We should have done Tuscany for both nights and reserved lunch and breakfast for Lakeview instead. My wife loved the spa and said it was one of the better ones she's experienced at a large hotel. She had a lady masseuse from Australia and couldn't stop raving about her. And the showers there too.

Everything from bottled water, drinks, to food is expensive for a hotel of this type so be prepared for that.

Would I go back? Maybe but during off peak seasons. A mild recommendation from us but definately try to go during off peak seasons.

Stayed here for 4 nights and the resort is beautiful on the outside, lobby and public areas. The hallways to the rooms are very old and worn looking, which carries into the rooms as well. Furnishings were extremely outdated. The pool area was very loud and annoying (to the point we couldn't even keep our deck door open) but then it quieted down later Sunday and into the first of the week. Other reviews spoke of drunk people at the pool - we never came close to this, since it took at least 30 minutes each time a drink was ordered. On a better note, the spa was really nice - I had the Desert Signature treatment (with Dale) and it was one of the best treatments I have ever experienced. The Palm Desert area is very beautiful and I would love to return, but would definately choose a different hotel.

We stayed here for 2 nights to celebrate our anniversary and we were blown away by the beautiful grounds, lobby and service! We were expecting everything to be pricey (and it was). The price would have been totally justified if only the rooms matched the 5 star experience of everything else. They were subpar at best, and I say that not only because they gave us a room on the 4th floor overlooking a roof. Cheap, old furniture and tacky gold picture frames - what's the deal?!

We ate at Tuscany's and the food, ambiance and service were superb! We mentioned it was our anniversary and our server not only gave us a very nice bottle of balsamic vinaigrette, but a complimentary dessert with candles!

I especially loved all the birds inside and outside! Even the ducks that swam in the pool with me! The grounds were jaw dropping gorgeous and their landscaping budget must be through the roof! We spent hours walking the property and had so much fun taking tons of pictures! The only other complaint I have is that the gondolas were not operating on either night we were there. The concierge and bell men both confirmed that they would be operating, but later there was a sign posted saying it was not operating due to "weather" - however is was sunny calm and beautiful outside. Such a disappointment because that was one of the things we were looking forward to doing most and the reason we decided to make reservations to dine on property.

Oh I guess do have another complaint… Beware of the music service through the TV!! They say you have 5 minutes free and anything over is sometime like $15! We were sampling some of our old favorite songs and when it got to 5 minutes there was no prompt to ask us if we wanted to continue and purchase the music service, so we immediately turned it off. Sure enough the next day we were charged the whole $15 for 3 seconds of music enjoyment. What a rip off!!

Don’t worry JW, I would still recommend you to anyone with deep pockets! :)

Awesome resort, if you didn't know you were in the desert you might think you're in Hawaii, then again, about this time of year the heat really turns up and soon it will be over 100 degrees at midnight! Superb service and amenities, complete with some very nice rooms and a balcony, with bathrooms big enough to accompany additional guests, about the only thing missing in the bathroom was a phone and TV. Nice glass shower plus a bathtub, seperate toilet, and a double sink vanity area that might as well have a chair. Remember, this is a big named resort and with it comes the big prices for food and drinks.....all of which are very good as well as expensive. Please note: there is a Ralph supermarket about a half block away if that's a consideration. A special shout-out of sincere "thanks" to front desk manager Lidia, she was instrumental in making our stay that much more special. Overall, this is a great resort to enjoy, one thing that I found a little odd, the specialty shops within this resort open around 11am and close around 4pm.......good thing shopping is really not a problem throughout the Palm Springs area, hope you too enjoy your vacation at this beautiful resort!
