Close to town, the Canyons allow the visitor to experience a plethora of palm trees that line mountain springs in the desert...an unusual thing for sure. And if you go up to the end of the ascending road to the "trading post" you can visit a waterfall--it must be great to see on a hot summer day though I doubt they allow bathers. Rangers are on hand to provide tours, talks and info.
The only drawback is that it is not free. Oh well.

We loved hiking here, walking along the palms in the canyons in their native environment was such a treat. Not something that will be easily forgotten.

The palm canyon hike from the visitor center and back along the ridge is one of my favorite I have ever done. This is the one for you if you have only one hike to take in the area. I made a repeat visit this year after visiting last year and was equally as enthralled by the views from the ridge. There are many different levels of hike and trails. Bring a lunch and spend the whole day. You will not regret a visit here.

I have been hiking here since I was a child and it was free a very long time ago. They started charging and the prices have gone up. I don't go as much anymore because there are so many other trails for free but it is definitely worth a shot. The surroundings are great and if you make the effort to hike a long way, the reward is beautiful! Avoid the summer at all costs! May - September are definitely not good months in the Coachella Valley.

This is the best Canyon among others, we believe. Easier and shorter trail with amazing views. Make sure to go through the loop, so you can experience the canyon along the water as well as on top of it with overall views from above. Please have enough time to visit all the three, it will take almost a whole day. If the time is short, do not miss this one!
