“A perfect weekend getaway!”
Reviewed 29 October 2008

A Place in the Sun is absolutely divine! My boyfriend and I were looking for a quick weekend getaway from Los Angeles and a friend recommended A Place in the Sun because they were dog friendly. We called last minute on Friday and they had a king bungalow available and a studio. We chose the bungalow and it was absolutely perfect for us and our large dog. We stayed one night and chose a late check-out on Sunday.

The entire place feels like you've been transported back to a bygone era but with all the added convenience of THIS era. The room was very large and clean. The back patio was great, especially for the dogs, and the pool was so relaxing. The owners keep the grounds immaculate. Sunday continental breakfast was served by the pool which was great before we headed out on a local hike.

Our total trip was only 30 hours long but it felt like we were gone for days. We came back to the hustle and bustle of LA completely rejuvenated! A Place in the Sun was the perfect getaway to a perfect weekend! We will definitely be back!!

There is still gold to be found in California! And it is waiting for you right here at A Place in the Sun. My wife and I were looking for the perfect get-a-way in Pallm Springs and we found it! Start with that golden sun bathing over you as you float in the fresh salt water pool that is kept at an ideal temperature. Or soak those weary muscles in the warm jacuzzi, also fed with salt water. Wow, no chemicals! Gaze out at the pristine garden that frames the pool with its palm trees that are doing their best to reach up to that very same sun. It is truly an oasis surrounded by cozy but spacious guest suites. We brought along food and wine which we serve ourselves from our kitchen and can sit out on our private patio that gives us our own "clothing optional" choice. No wonder that we haven't been out of this lovely retreat since we arrived three days ago! We brought a stack of books but also discovered that there are books to borrow in the office, as well as videos and DVD's which the super friendly staff are happy to make available. All of this plus really reasonable prices!
Gold.......yes, pure gold. Now it is OUR Place in the Sun.

A Place in the Sun Garden Hotel is a very quiet and quaint hotel built in the 50's. It has been updated a bit, but still has the same charm it had back then.

We have visited twice this year. The last visit was with 4 other couples.

All rooms have individual private patios and there is a covered area for those who don't want to get in the sun. This hotel is also "dog friendly". The pool is salt water and very well maintained.

The staff is excellent and very nice and helpful. Very eager to please the guests.

I stayed at A Place in the Sun in Palm Springs for a week - July 21-27, and it was a great stay! The property's history was interesting - I felt like a star. The pool and jacuzzi were sparkling and blue, the room was roomy and light, and the staff was friendly and helpful. The grounds are very nice and well maintained. I also liked the location - pretty central to everything, yet quiet and peaceful. You can even bring your pets!! The hotel has free coffee and stuff in the office in the morning. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, and would gladly stay again. Thank you Norma and Ron! - Blake Smith

Booked three nights in early May, through the hotel website.
We did book a studio room the cheap option. We expected basic accommadation, but the cleanliness left a lot to be desired.Certainly not up to the standard my wife and i. We were invited by other guests to look at their rooms, which were a lot nicer and cleaner than no 14. Though they had dearer rooms.
The hotel website states 'pet friendly' but there was one owner who let his dog do 'it' on the grass area, surrounding the pool, picked it up in a bag and put it in the bin. This bin was under the gazebo, next to the bbq. This happened the three days we were there. And after three days it was overflowing, my wife had to ask the office manager to empty it!!!.Not nice
The same grass area, where the dog did 'it' was also used as a playgound for a family stopping there, and guests had to walk over it when going back to their rooms from the pool. Not nice
There should be a separate area for dogs doing 'it'.
We were there at the weekend and were looking forward to the lavish continental breakfast (on the website) we and other guests waited for it to be served under the gazebo. It did not happen, they have been stopped by the health authority .But had not taken it off the website. We and other guests had not even be told when we checked in. Not nice.
The things we did like.
The pool was excellent.
The area around the hotel, we like the fact you could walk to nearby restaurants.
The manager copied us a map for hiking.
Mixing socially with a diverse group of guests, they made the stay worth while and had a laugh about our 'grotty' room..
Emma and parents from Vancover.
The girls and 'Imperial' from Long Beach.THANKS.

When we got back from our trip, we had a e-mail waiting for us from the owner.Which we liked.
We put all our concerns to her.
She admitted not taking the breakfast off the homepage, that she like our suggestion of a dog toilet away from pool and grass. And that they do deep cleaning in the summer..
She suggest that we try a Large Studio on our next visit, but we will not see if any changes have been made, as this is the ' LAST place in the sun' we will re-visit

sellps, Owner at A Place in the Sun Garden Hotel, responded to this review, 3 September 2008
We always welcome feedback from our guests, but since they chose to take this route, I thought I’d respond to a few of their issues here.

Regarding the cleanliness – our standard studio, being the least expensive unit in our unique place, is of course the highest occupancy. When I saw their headline “cleaning issues”, I was concerned that they were finding dust bunnies under the bed. Our housekeeping staff is excellent, achieving unheard of “good housekeeping” remarks from AAA surprise inspections. There were marks on the wall and in the closet of this unit, and some of the ceiling tiles were discolored. In addition to our deep cleaning, this unit, and our other two standard studios have been freshly painted, and new wood panel ceilings installed over the summer. They look great!

We are pet-friendly, also. All of our units have private walled patios, which work so well for people traveling with their pets. We have pet policies in place, including advising guests at check-in where to walk their dog and where to dispose of the waste, and a written policy in the pet section of each room’s guest manual. There’s an area just outside our back gates that are perfect for dog walking, and we provide doggie bags for guests to properly dispose of their dogs waste, in the dumpster outside of the premises. There is a front desk manager in the office every day, from 9 to 5, and someone who lives on-site and is on call after hours, if there is ever a problem.

Regarding the continental breakfast – at the time of their visit, the health department had visited and said that new rules were in place for all California hotels. To continue serving our continental breakfast outside in the gazebo, the health department would then have required that we build a separate kitchen for preparing food, complete with triple stainless steel sinks and splashguards. We would have also had to serve the breakfast in an enclosed room, which eliminated the poolside gazebo. To comply with these new regulations, we had to reconfigure the office with a new glass-front refrigerator and cabinetry to store everything we would be serving, pre-packaged, in the office. Continental breakfast items were available at that time all day, every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but in the office, not in the gazebo. Since that time, the health department has had so many complaints from small hotels that they have loosened up on their requirements (sure, now that we’ve complied and sent our yearly fee in!).

SO, effective October 1st, we will be resuming serving our expanded continental breakfast poolside in the gazebo, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. We will continue to have pre-packaged pastries, muffins, cereals, oatmeal, juices, etc., complimentary to our guests, in the office as well.

We booked A Place In The Sun for 16 nights over the Christmas/New Year's holidays. We wanted a comfy place with a kitchen so we could cook and entertain friends. The hotel is not fancy....it's cozy and comfortable. The rooms are 1950's with rattan furntiture from the 80's right out of the Golden Girll's. The owners Ron and Norma are lovely people and their friendly attitude extends to their staff. The mountain views are breathtaking...the pool and spa are sparkling and heated to just the right temp. Wonderful towels and pool chairs....TV with VCR/DVD in bedroom and living room. We really had just a marvelous time. This is a very quiet low key place....pets and children are welcome, however don't go is you are rowdy of have poorly behaved children or pets...you simply won't fit in. This is tranquil and civilized. Just plain cozy. We'll be back!

A Place in The Sun was the perfect getaway for my family! 25 family members traveled to this great hotel to celebrate October Birthdays! It could not have turned out any better! Every person there wondered how I found this location and commented that they would come back on several occasions in the future.

The breakfasts served out by the pool on Saturday and Sunday were not only delicious, but provided a perfect atmosphere for meeting in the morning to chat with family as well as the other guests that were staying there!

We were all able to bring our special canine friends who also had a great time! The patio/backyard areas were perfect to host them! Our family had several of the rooms there and I was lucky enough to see most of them. They were all well kept, clean and spacious! Kitchens served to help with the "party" cooking as well as the wonderful patio and barbecue area that were located outside! The pool and grass area was immaculate and well maintained.

It was useless of me to worry about being responsible for choosing the location for this event because in the end my family raved about it and promised to make it an annual event!!

A special thanks goes out to Norma as well as the staff for being so gracious and welcoming !!
