“Iconic Destination in Palm Springs”

Smoke Tree Ranch was the second home for Walt Disney prior to his death. There are private homes here and there are rental cottages. Some have been updated and then there are classic units that have not been.
The Ranch House is where you check in and where the main dining room is. The grounds include a swimming pool, bowling green, three hole pitch and putt course, horseshoes, tennis courts, bicycle riding and a variety of other activities. The swimming pool is of the 50's era but clean and well maintained.
This is an excellent place for families who want activities provided. An activity sheet is provided at check-in with many possibilities from yoga to hikes and horseback riding.
The restaurant was excellent. The service was excellent and the food was superb. The freshness, variety and overall quality was wonderful.
The classic rooms, where we stayed, were 50's to 60's basic. It has one room with a separate bathroom. The bed was fine but the bathroom could use an update. The mirror had spots and discoloration. There is very little counter space. The room was musty and wall air-conditioning was adequate.
We spent Valentine's day weekend and the dinner for Valentine Day was steak and lobster and a first class meal. We enjoyed the history and memorabilia throughout the facility. Pictures of past presidents, celebrities and Walt Disney adorn the walls. For anybody who appreciates Walt Disney it is a must visit destination but very pricy.

Room Tip: Closer to the "ranch House" is better for access. The updated rooms cost more but may be w...

This property was once a top-notch guest ranch. These days the stables are not connected to the "ranch" but they are not too far away if you want to ride horses. The cottage accommodations are fine during the day, but we had a new cockroach every night! Not the small kind, but the HUGE, as big as your thumb kind. And when the lights were out, the rodents scurried in the space above the false ceiling. It was quite nerve-racking!! We complained and the management had exterminators spray around our "cottage" but it didn't help. We were told that it's difficult to control these desert animals.
The rest of the property was nice. We played tennis and swam in the pool. The food was good, but somewhat repetitive. In the evenings, we gathered in the fireplace room off the dining room to chat with others in our party. It was a nice place to get together. There was a piano, too.
We stayed at Smoke Tree Ranch in 2008 without encountering any critters, but didn't have that luck this year.

Room Tip: Try to get a cottage without any bugs!!

We were looking for a nice, quite and peacefull hotel for our 4 children family in Palm Springs. The Smoke Tree Ranch was the perfect pick for us. This is a beautifull place, refined, full of history with very nice accomodations. The restaurant is great for families with a very nice buffet and plats du jours. If you do not like huge resorts and you look for something more traditional, well maintained for your family this is definitively the place to stay. They sometimes organize kids events, canyon horse riding, picnics outside banquet with live music. Highly recommended ! It is a trip by itself to stay at STR !

This was a fantstic place for a family to visit. Located just outside La Quinta in Palm Springs, this resort catered a wedding event that was fanatstic. Very rustic and natural, Smoke Tree Ranch was still elegant and friendly. Always love La Quinta area. I know the Tucker family had a great time. Thanks, Geoff Tucker

I was unsure about what kind of accomodations to book in the area, but ended up choosing Smoke Tree because so many people I knew had stayed there. It was perfect! We read books, swam in the uncrowded pool, took walks, etc. Smoke Tree has a laid back, but refined atmosphere. The dress code was refreshing: none of the men seemed to keel over from having to wear a collared shirt. The staff members were friendly and helpful, and the food was great! I am so glad we chose this instead of a golf resort.

Room Tip: There is a wood smoke smell in the rooms with fireplaces. Take note if that is important to you.

I cannot say enough about Smoke Tree Ranch in Palm Springs California. The cottages are spacious and have everything you will need for a one night stay or a ten night stay.
The RANCH has been left in its natural desert state. The raw beauty of the landscape and the mountains will take your breath away. The stars at night and the red sunrise in the morning will last forever in your memory.
I have been coming to STR for many years, my sister is a colonist, and has a home there. But this time we came for a wedding and stayed in one of the cottages....I was just blown away with the wonderful service, the meticulous house cleaning and the over all feel of the place.
STR has a wonderful meal plan included with the room if you choose to go that route. The RANCH HOUSE serves buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner....so you actually never have to eat anywhere else in Palm Springs. The Ranch has swimming, tennis, golf, horse back riding...you name it...they have it...a TRUE RESORT!
Why..why...why ...would anyone stay anywhere else? Try it some time...you will LOVE IT!

My stay here was for a business related retreat. Normally the cost well exceeds what I spend for my personal travel. The cottage was immaculate, probably recently remodeled, very comfortable but not extraordinary. What you're paying for here is the beautiful view and surroundings, the really good service and exceptional food. Also the the sense of remoteness even though you are just minutes away from downtown Palm Springs. Only you can decide how much that is worth to you.
