We stayed at Smoketree in a small private home last year during the week of Easter. We've stayed in a couple of places in Palm Springs with our child and Smoketree is one of the few places we have no fear that she is welcome. The staff is kid-friendly, they have highchairs and boosters available and residents and Ranch guests are happy to see kids. Minimal traffic and many other families add to the child-friendly feel.
Smoketree http://www.smoketreeranch.com/ offers both Ranch-owned cottages and private homes for rent. We haven't stayed in a cottage but they've been renovating them over the last 1-2 years and when we were there, we heard good reviews. We like the option of a private home with a full kitchen, washer & dryer and other amenities particularly useful when traveling with children.
The Ranch offers tennis lessons (good), has a small golf area (marginal - we saw a woman let her dog out on the course), horses, walking tours and other activities. During the Easter vacation, they have special activities such as Egg hunts, theme dinners, cocktail hour at the pool, the Easter bunny and more.
The food was good and buffets offered a nice variety. If you go with a private home you don't have to subscribe to the meal plan and have the option of dining at the Ranch house, in your cottage or off site for a little more variety.
We had a great time with our child and can't wait to go back.
